Sky Overseas Updates 2022-23: FIBA Women’s World Cup – Group Phase (Day 6)

CHICAGO – The 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup continued its Group Phase play this week, with four Chicago Sky players taking action with their respective countries: Kahleah Copper (USA), Emma Meessemanand Julie Allemand (Belgium) and Li Yueru (China).


In Belgium’s game against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Meesseman finished with four points and eight rebounds before leaving the game with 8:24 left in the third quarter with a left calf injury. She has withdrawn from the competition and her timeline to return has not been determined. More information can be found on Belgium basketball’s official website here. The Chicago Sky has no further updates.

With a spot in the Quarter-Finals, Copper and the United States (5-0) continued its dominating effort against Bosnia-Herzegovina (0-5), 121-59. Copper finished with 11 points, six rebounds and one steal in 17 minutes as a starter for Team USA. Kelsey Plum led the U.S. with 20 points. The U.S. still stands as the only undefeated team in the games.

Meesseman, Allemand and Belgium (3-2) solidified its place in the Quarter-Finals last game with a win against Bosnia-Herzegovina (0-5), 85-55. They faced Li and Team China (4-1) for its final game of Group Phase play, who defeated the Belgian Cats, 81-55. For China, Li tallied 11 points, three assists, one block and a team-high nine rebounds. For Belgium, Allemand recorded seven points, four assists, three rebounds and one steal.

In Group A, the United States, Belgium, China and Puerto Rico qualified for the Quarter-Finals, while Australia, Serbia, France and Canada round out the Quarter-Final teams for Group B. A draw after the final game on Monday determined the pairings for the Quarter-Finals.

The pairings are as follows:

Left Bracket:

USA vs. Serbia on Wednesday, Sept. 28th at 9:00 p.m. CST

Canada vs. Puerto Rico on Wednesday, Sept. 28th at 11:30 p.m. CST

Right Bracket:

China vs. France on Thursday, Sept. 29th at 3:00 a.m. CST

Belgium vs. Australia on Thursday, Sept. 29th at 5:30 a.m. CST

The U.S., if advanced to the Semi-Finals, will play the winner of Canada/Puerto Rico. Belgium will play the winner of China/France if they advance to the Semis. If China wins against France, they will play the winner of Belgium/Australia.

Winners advanced to the Semi-Finals will play on Friday, Sept. 30th. The Third Place game will be played on Sept. 30th at 10:00 p.m. CST on ESPN+, while the Final will be played on Saturday, Oct. 1st at 1:00 a.m. CST on ESPN2.
