Sky Overseas Updates 2022-23: FIBA Women’s World Cup – Group Phase (Day 5)

CHICAGO – The 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup continued its Group Phase play this week, with four Chicago Sky players taking action with their respective countries: Kahleah Copper (USA), Emma Meessemanand Julie Allemand (Belgium) and Li Yueru (China).

With a rest day on Saturday (local CST time), teams were back in action to continue Group Phase play on Sunday.

With its spot in the Quarter-Finals already solidified, Copper and the United States (4-0) continued its dominating effort against Korea (1-3), 145-69, its largest margin of victory since 2014. The United States is now 6-2 against Korea all-time in the World Cup and is currently at a six game win streak against Korea. The U.S. also recorded 94 points in the paint, along with setting a single-game assists record at 36 assists. The U.S. now stands as the only undefeated team in the games.

Copper finished with 11 points, five rebounds and two steals in nine minutes off the bench for Team USA.

Meesseman, Allemand and Belgium (3-1), who were coming off a narrow victory against Puerto Rico, solidified its place in the Quarter-Finals with a win against Bosnia-Herzegovina (0-4), 85-55. Allemand recorded seven points, nine assists and three steals, while Meesseman finished with four points and eight rebounds before leaving the game with 8:24 left in the third quarter with a left calf injury. She has withdrawn from the competition and her timeline to return has not been determined. More information can be found on Belgium basketball’s official website here. China (3-1), after coming off a loss against the U.S., cemented its spot in the Quarter-Finals with a 95-60 victory over Puerto Rico (1-3). Li tallied 16 points, tied a team-high eight rebounds, two steals and one block in 26 minutes of action.

In its final game of Group Phase play, the United States will play Bosnia-Herzegovina on Monday, Sept. 26th at 11:00 p.m. CST and will be aired on ESPNU. Belgium will face off against Li and Team China on Monday, Sept. 26th at 10:30 p.m. CST. This game will be available on ESPN+. With their victories on Sunday, China and Belgium now join the United States with spots in the Quarter-Finals. At the end of the Group Phase play on Monday, Sept. 26th (local CST time), a draw will determine the pairings for the Quarter-Finals.
