September 12, 2022 – Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA)Connecticut Sun News Release

Uncasville, CT – Today, the Connecticut Sun announced its involvement in FRESH New London’s first annual Garden Walk for Food Justice.

The Garden Walk, which is being held to promote food justice and sustaining green spaces in New London, will take place on Saturday, September 17 at 9:30 A.M. Participants will walk a 2.5 mile circuit in New London, visiting each of FRESH’s five gardens. Walkers will have the chance to see FRESH’s innovative urban farming techniques, get to sample seasonal crops, and learn more about each garden and how FRESH reclaimed these spaces amongst New London’s cityscape. At the conclusion of the walk, there will be pizza from FRESH’s outdoor woodfire oven, music, festivities, and plants and merchandise for sale.

“We all deserve control over our food choices and access to quality greenspaces in our neighborhoods, said Alicia McAvay, Executive Director of FRESH New London . This fundraiser uplifts the way that FRESH, in partnership with neighbors and organizations, has reclaimed previously blighted and forgotten land. We welcome everyone to come support food justice and celebrate the beauty we are building here in New London.”

The Connecticut Sun is calling all its fans to donate and join the Sun front office staff and two players in the walk as a part of “Team Connecticut Sun.” Fans who donate at least $25 and register to walk on “Team Connecticut Sun” will be given a Connecticut Sun t-shirt that they can pick up at the Connecticut Sun table at FRESH’s Mercer Street garden location.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Connecticut is a sponsor of the Garden Walk, one of the initiatives that is part of the collaboration with the Sun to help address food insecurity across the state of Connecticut all season long. Anthem and the Sun are working together on projects that focus on equitable access to nutritious foods and fitness mentorship in under-served communities.

“Our team at Anthem is on a mission to improve lives and communities, and we have a long-standing heritage here that we’ve built over the past 85 years,” said Lou Gianquinto, president, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Connecticut. “That’s why we are continuing to partner with a great organization like the Connecticut Sun on events that support people’s health locally. This event is important because it raises awareness about food insecurity while also giving attendees the opportunity to participate in a healthy activity like walking.”
