Fort Wayne Mad Ants Tie Franchise Assist Record in Opening Night Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Fort Wayne Mad Ants tied a franchise assist record and came close to setting a franchise scoring record Saturday night in a 152-129 win over the Grand Rapids Gold.

The assist total for Fort Wayne of 39 tied the franchise mark while the scoring came just shy of the 155 points scored by the Mad Ants during the 2021 Winter Showcase.


Fort Wayne was paced by 35 points, seven assists and six rebounds from Gabe York and a 27-point, seven rebound, six assist effort from Indiana Pacer two-way Trevelin Queen.

The Gold came out strong early, leading by as many as seven in the opening quarter behind Norris Cole and Grant Golden before the Mad Ants pushed back to lead 31-30 after one. Cole and Golden each had eight points in the first quarter, countered by York’s nine.

York then scored 14 in the second and went into the halftime break with 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting with the Mad Ants shooting 60.4 percent at the halftime break with each team having four players already in double figure scoring. Fort Wayne led 79-52 after a 48-point second quarter.

The Mad Ants pushed further ahead in the third, leading 120-84.

Fort Wayne’s lead would open up to 45 points in the fourth quarter, but Grand Rapids pushed back to outscore Fort Wayne 45-32 in the final frame.

Grand Rapids was led by 21 points and eight rebounds from Peyton Watson and an 18 point/14 rebound effort from Jack White.

Behind York and Queen, the Mad Ants got 23 points from Bennie Boatwright, 14 from Justin Anderson and 10 points from Will Vorhees. The team tied a franchise record from 2015 with 39 assists, led by David Stockton’s 11. Fort Wayne also hit 17 three pointers at a 47.2 percent success rate compared to Grand Rapids’ 12 three pointers (37.5%).

The teams will meet again on Sunday with a 5 p.m. tip in Fort Wayne.
