Sky Overseas Updates 2022-23: FIBA Women’s World Cup – Quarter-Finals

CHICAGO – The 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup began elimination games in the Quarter-Finals, with four Chicago Sky players taking action with their respective countries: Kahleah Copper (USA), Emma Meessemanand Julie Allemand (Belgium) and Li Yueru (China).

In Belgium’s Group Phase game against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Meesseman left the game with 8:24 left in the third quarter with a left calf injury. She has withdrawn from the competition and her timeline to return has not been determined. More information can be found on Belgium basketball’s official website here. The Chicago Sky has no further updates.

Copper and the United States continued its quest for a third straight World Cup Championship against Serbia, 88-55. Copper finished with two points and an assist off the bench for Team USA. Kelsey Plum led the team once again in scoring with 17 points. Team USA trailed for the first time in the competition, 11-7, but not before taking a 20-0 to pave the way for a bigger lead. The U.S. still stands as the only undefeated team in the games. They will now face Canada, who has won four out of its last five games.

In their Quarter-Finals game, Allemand and Belgium faced off against Australia. Meesseman was still in Sydney supporting her teammates on the sidelines. Belgium’s run in the World Cup ultimately fell short to Australia, 69-86. Allemand led the team in scoring with 15 points to go along with seven assists, two rebounds and a steal in 30 minutes of play.

Meesseman, Allemand and Belgium fell short of its ultimate goal this year, finishing its 2022 World Cup run in the Quarter-Finals and finished third in group play. They recorded wins against Korea, Puerto Rico and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Li and Team China are on a three-game winning streak, recently defeating France, 85-71, to secure their spot in the Semi-Finals. Li finished with five points, five rebounds and a stealin 16 minutes of play. China will now play against the host country Australia in the Semis.

USA vs. Canada on Friday, Sept. 30 at 2:00 a.m. CST

China vs. Australia on Friday, Sept. 30 at 4:30 a.m. CST

THIRD-PLACE GAME:

China/Australia vs. USA/Canada 10:00 p.m. CST

The Semi-Finals will be played on Friday, Sept. 30th. The two defeated teams in the Semis will play each other in the Third Place game on Sept. 30th at 10:00 p.m. CST on ESPN+. The Final will be played on Saturday, Oct. 1st at 1:00 a.m. CST on ESPN2.
