THE OPPOSITION

The Everett Silvertips, one of the favourites in the Western Conference again this season, currently hold a 7-3-0-0 record this season. They’ll play Moose Jaw on Friday before visiting the Brandt Centre on Saturday.

This year’s edition of the Silvertips features standout defenceman Olen Zellweger, a second round pick of the Anaheim Ducks from 2021, who led all WHL defencemen with 78 points last season, despite playing in just 55 games. He has 11 points in seven games so far in 2022-23. Zellweger was teammates with Connor Bedard on Team Canada’s World Junior team that won Gold this past summer in Edmonton, where he also recorded 11 points in seven games, which led all defencemen in the tournament and was third in scoring amongst all skaters.

Eighteen-year-old forward Austin Roest has burst onto the scene this season up front for Everett, sitting second in the entire WHL in scoring with 19 points (9G-10A), trailing only Bedard of the Pats. Last season, Roest had 32 points in 59 games.

On Sunday, the 5-5-0-0 Try-City Americans visit the Brandt Centre.

Rookie forward Jordan Gavin is one to watch for the Americans, who was the second overall pick in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft last December. He already has 12 points (2G-10A) in 10 games so far this season, second on the team. The Surrey, B.C. native has nine points in his last six games.

Another standout young piece for Tri-City is defenceman Lukas Dragicevic, the number four overall pick from the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft. Last season, he registered 32 points (6G-26A) in 62 games as a 16-year-old. He already has 11 points (2G-9A) this season, which is tied for third amongst all WHL defencemen.
