OT Heroics from Jake Furlong in Val D’Or

October 28, 2022 – Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)Halifax Mooseheads News Release

Defenceman Jake Furlong came into Friday night’s game with no goals in 10 games played this season but the Upper Tantallon, NS native picked the perfect time to jump onto the scoresheet by scoring twice including the overtime winner to give the Mooseheads a 3-2 victory on the road against the Val d’Or Foreurs.

The San Jose Sharks prospect took a pass from Jordan Dumais and made a beautiful move to the backhand to score the winner on a partial breakaway just 50 seconds into the extra period. Dumais had another banner night himself by factoring into each Halifax tally with one goal and two assists.

The game was a defensive battle between the clubs through 40 minutes with the Foreurs clinging to a 1-0 lead thanks to a first period goal by Alexandre Guy as Mooseheads goalie Brady James stopped 18 of 19 shots through two periods of play. Furlong finally got the Herd on the board when he tied the game 1-1 at the 11:48 mark of the third period. Attilio Biasca drove the puck deep into the Val d’Or zone and skated with it behind the net before dishing off to Dumais who passed to Markus Vidicek before Furlong finished the play by roofing a short-side shot by goalie Mathys Fernandez.

Dumais continued his amazing start to the season with a snipe on the power play with 4:53 remaining in regulation, giving the Mooseheads their first lead of the night at 2-1 with the assist going to David Moravec. The Blue Jackets prospect has points in each of the first 11 games this year and is tied for the QMJHL scoring lead with 27 points. He has an incredible 64 points in his last 23 consecutive regular season games dating back to last season.

Just when the Mooseheads thought they might have rallied back to sneak out a victory, the Foreurs came up with some late game magic with the extra attacker on the ice. Val d’Or’s Kale McCallum tied the game 2-2 after a strange bounce off the end boards before the puck found its way behind James with 1:38 to go. The officials needed a lengthy review to confirm the goal but eventually pointed to center ice, setting up the dramatic OT finish for Furlong.

Brady James ended the night with 28 saves as Halifax won for the second straight game on this three-game road trip and improved the overall record to 8-1-1-1 on the season. The Mooseheads will look to complete a perfect road trip when they visit the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Saturday night at 8pm ADT.

The next home game for the Mooseheads is Thursday, November 3rd at 7pm when Halifax hosts Baie-Comeau for Student Night at Scotiabank Centre. Tickets are just $10 for fans with valid Student ID. Tickets are on sale now at TicketAtlantic.com.
