McConvey, Watson, Grant, Simmons Selected with Top National Lacrosse League Entry Draft Picks

TORONTO – Thomas McConvey (Toronto/Mimico Mountaineers Jr A), Dylan Watson (Guelph, ON/Orangeville Northmen Jr A.) and Owen Grant (Newmarket, ON, Toronto Beaches Jr A) were the first three players selected in tonight’s 2022 National Lacrosse League (@NLL) Entry Draft, held at The Carlu. McConvey was the first overall pick by the Rochester Knighthawks; Simmons went next to the expansion Las Vegas Desert Dogs; and with the third selection the Vancouver Warriors took Grant.


The Entry Draft for the largest and most successful professional lacrosse property in the world continued through the first round as follows: (4) Albany, Alex Simmons (Smithville, ON/St. Catharines Athletics Jr A, Cobourg Kodiaks Sr A); (5) Panther City, Jason Knox (Huntsville, ON, Burlington Chiefs Jr A); (6) Saskatchewan, Austin Madronic (Victoria, BC, Victoria Shamrocks Jr A); (7) Albany, Will Johansen (Victoria, B.C., Nanaimo Timbermen Jr A); (8) New York, Zack Deaken (Orangeville, ON, Orangeville Northmen Jr A.); (9) Panther City, Mathieu Gautier (St. Albert, AB, Edmonton Miners Jr A); and (10) Calgary, Seth Van Schepen (Brampton, ON, Oakville Rock Sr B.).

“There is nothing like the energy of the live NLL Entry Draft on an important moment in the lives of these players and pivotal day for the clubs as they build their rosters,” said NLL Commissioner Brett Frood. “It was a pleasure meeting the next generation of NLL talent and their families and we wish them all the success moving forward.”

The first round was broadcast live for the first time on TSN.ca and the TSN app in Canada and ESPN+ in the United States, with additional rounds covered in real time on NLL social channels. It marked the most extensive live coverage of the NLL Draft in the league’s history.

All 15 active NLL franchises for the 2022-23 season participated in the Entry Draft, which was held virtually in 2020 and 2021 following a two-year run at Philadelphia’s Xfinity Live! in 2018 and 2019.
