Thunderbirds Sign Oakley Thomas to One-Year Contract

September 2, 2022 – National Lacrosse League (NLL)Halifax Thunderbirds News Release

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia – The Halifax Thunderbirds today announced they have signed defenceman Oakley Thomas to a one-year contract.

“Oakley is a versatile player with very deceiving size and speed,” Thunderbirds assistant coach Stew Monture said. “He can help a team in many different places on the floor. He can be used on both ends and in the face-off circle as an above-average draw man.”

Thomas played for the Six Nations Rivermen in the Ontario Senior B Lacrosse League and helped the team win the Ontario Series Lacrosse championship. The left-hander saw action in 11 regular season contests, posting nine points (1G, 8A), and six postseason games, recording seven points (2G, 5A).

Listed at 6-foot-1, 230 pounds, Thomas has spent three seasons playing for the Rivermen. In 36 regular season contests, he has 29 points (8G, 21A). He also has 11 points (2G, 9A) in 19 postseason games played.

“Oakley has good size and a good lacrosse IQ,” Thunderbirds Player Development Coach Jason Johnson said. “He can be deceptively quick. He may be listed as a D guy, but he has the potential to play several positions on the floor.”

In 2021, Thomas played for the Haudenosaunee Nationals Super Sixes in Baltimore. Out of Akwesasne, he played two seasons at Onondaga Community College where he racked up the accolades, being named All-Conference by the Mid-State Athletic Conference, First-Team All-Region, and First-Team All-American by the NJCAA in 2014 and 2015. Thomas played in 35 games across those two seasons, recording five points (4G, 1A), collecting 34 ground balls, and causing 28 turnovers.

The Thunderbirds return to Scotiabank Centre for their third season in Halifax this winter. Season tickets to watch championship-caliber professional lacrosse in Nova Scotia are on sale at HalifaxThunderbirds.com or by calling or texting 902-334-2333.
