Zellweger Nets Hat Trick, Williams Wins 200th in 6-2 Victory Over Edmonton

EVERETT, Wash. – Olen Zellweger’s third period hat trick plus a pair of goals from Ryan Hofer helped head coach Dennis Williams on his way to his 200th career win as a WHL head coach in a 6-2 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings.


The Silvertips erupted for 62 shots on goal in the game, 23 of them coming in the first period. It took until shot 23 for the Silvertips to break through, as Ryan Hofer scored with just 11 seconds remaining in the opening frame.

Edmonton rallied in the second, with a pair of goals off the stick of Rhett Melnyk. Hofer evened the score at 16:18, blasting a one-timer on the powerplay for his second of the contest. Everett peppered Edmonton goaltender Kolby Hay with 23 more shots in the second period, but the score remained deadlocked at two heading into the second intermission.

Zellweger recorded his first of the game 41 seconds into the third period, stealing a loose puck in front of the net and slipping a backhander through Hay. Under two minutes later, he picked up his second, receiving a Matthew Paszkiewicz pass along the left-side boards and wiring a shot home. Austin Roest converted a breakaway goal at 6:34 in the period for his fifth of the season, extending his point streak to six games.

Zellweger capped off the hat trick at 13:05 in the third period, rifling a wrist shot in from the slot to complete a 6-2 final.

Tim Metzger stopped 17 of 19 to pick up his first career win in his first WHL start.

With the win, Dennis Williams improves to 200-63-22 as a head coach in the WHL, all with the Silvertips.

The Silvertips will visit the Kelowna Rockets Friday night before returning for Pink the Rink against the Seattle Thunderbirds this Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Tickets are available.
