Winterhawks Weekly: Portland Stays Perfect with Pair of Wins

Winterhawks Weekly: Portland Stays Perfect with Pair of Wins

October 10, 2022 – Western Hockey League (WHL)Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks’ hot start continued in the third week of play with wins over the Medicine Hat Tigers and Spokane Chiefs. With the pair of victories, Portland is 5-0-0 for the first time since the 1993-94 season.

Next up, the Hawks host the defending WHL Champion Edmonton Oil Kings on Tuesday and the 2023 Memorial Cup host Kamloops Blazers on Saturday for Hawktoberfest!

Hot Hawks:

Forward Robbie Fromm-Delorme led all Winterhawks skaters with five points over the weekend, culminating in a dynamic 2G, 2A effort to pace the team’s 5-2 win in Spokane on Sunday. Fromm-Delorme ranks ninth in league scoring and is the only Portland skater to have points in each of the team’s five games.

Forward Jack O’Brien bagged four points (1G, 3A) over the weekend with back-to-back multi-point games. O’Brien has now recorded two or more points in three of the team’s first five games.

Forward Kyle Chyzowski came in clutch on Saturday with the overtime tally, then built on that showing with another goal and an assist on Sunday. Chyzowski has points in four of Portland’s five games this season.

Forward Josh Zakreski earned first-star honors on Saturday with a goal and an assist, then chipped in another helper in Sunday’s victory. The rookie enters the new week riding a three-game point streak.

Defenseman Luca Cagnoni continues to turn heads, tallying a highlight-reel goal on Saturday and another primary helper on Sunday. The top 2023 NHL Draft prospect sits one point shy of the WHL lead in points among defensemen with two goals and four assists.

Goaltenders Dante Giannuzzi (3-0-0) and Jan Špunar (2-0-0) both remained perfect on the year, each winning once in last week’s action.

Play of the Week:

The Portland power play was unbeatable on Sunday in Spokane, notching four tallies with the man advantage. This one, netted by Jack O’Brien, was the best of the bunch. After the Hawks win the faceoff, Luca Cagnoni collects the puck at the blue line, feeds James Stefan, who dishes to Robbie Fromm-Delorme at the side of the net, who then spins a pass to O’Brien waiting for the one-timer. It’s worth a watch…or seven.

Weekly Rewind:

Portland 4 vs Medicine Hat 3 (OT) (Saturday):

After a furious Tigers comeback in the final three minutes of play, the Winterhawks responded in overtime as Kyle Chyzowski potted the game-winner to seal a 4-3 win for Portland.

Portland 5 at Spokane 2 (Sunday):

Robbie Fromm-Delorme posted four points (2G, 2A) and four other Winterhawks recorded multiple points as they cruised past the Spokane Chiefs 5-2 on Sunday.
