Whitehead, Stars Blank Lancers
November 5, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL) – Lincoln Stars News Release
Cameron Whitehead made 30 saves to record his second shutout of the season and the Lincoln Stars defeated the Omaha Lancers, 1-0, on Friday night at the Ice Box.
Lincoln (7-3) bounced back from a pair of losses thanks to their netminder. The Stars outshot the Lancers (4-4-2-1) in each of the first two periods but Whitehead faced a barrage of shots in the third. The Vegas Golden Knights’ draft pick and Northeastern commit stood tall in the final 20 minutes, turning aside all 14 shots to earn his second shutout of the season and the third in his USHL career.
“It was an overall team effort,” Whitehead said. “We knew what was coming throughout the week and we had a really good week of practice. We made the adjustments that we needed to make, our transition defense and all that stuff. It showed that it worked so we just have to keep it rolling.”
Keaton Peters scored the game’s lone goal three minutes into the second period off a give-and-go with Daniel Sambuco. Whitehead made a big stop shortly before the goal on a shot from Alex Bump on a two-on-one opportunity. The rebound caromed toward the near boards and the turning attempt was intercepted in front of the net by Boston Buckberger, who fed Peters at center ice. Peters skated up the middle, flicked a pass to his right to Sambuco and then one-timed the return feed past Lancers’ goaltender Michael Hrabal for his team-leading seventh goal of the season and third against Omaha.
“Boston gave me a great head-man pass up,” Peters said, “and I saw Sambuco with me on my right, dished it to him, got myself in some space behind their d-man and he made a great play back to me and all I had to do was put it in. Especially since there was only one d-man back we knew we had an opportunity and I’m glad we cashed in.”
The Stars and the Lancers combined for 77 penalty minutes but neither team was able to cash in on the man advantage. Lincoln has now taken two-of-three games against Omaha with both wins coming at home. The two rivals will next meet up next Friday, Nov. 11, at the Liberty First Credit Union Arena.
The Stars look to sweep the weekend as they face the Sioux City Musketeers at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday night at the Tyson Events Center. Lincoln’s next home game is Nov. 12 on Military Appreciation Night against Des Moines. There will be a postgame jersey auction and tickets can be purchased at lincolnstars.com.
