Warriors Defeat Pats 5-2 in Moose Jaw
October 21, 2022 – Western Hockey League (WHL) – Regina Pats News Release
Moose Jaw, Sask. – The Regina Pats gave up four first-period goals and had no answer, as they lost 5-2 to their Trans-Canada rival Moose Jaw Warriors at the Moose Jaw Events Centre on Thursday.
Cole Jordan scored twice, while Brayden Yager, Denton Mateychuk, and Tate Schofer scored for the Warriors in the win. Jackson Unger picked up his first win of the season and first career win against the Pats, stopping 23 of 25 shots.
Stanislav Svozil and Connor Bedard scored for the Pats in the loss. Despite allowing 5 goals, Drew Sim kept the Pats in the contest with some unbelievable saves as he stopped 37 of 42 Warriors shots.
First Period
MJ 0-1 at 5:58 – Cole Jordan (1), assisted by Josh Hoekstra and Robert Baco // The Warriors worked the puck around the Pats zone and Hoekstra got the puck to Jordan at the point who let a long-distance shot go which beat a screened Drew Sim to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
MJ 0-2 at 9:01 – Brayden Yager (4), assisted by Jagger Firkus and Denton Mateychuk (PP) // As the Warriors were carrying the play on the powerplay, Firkus found Yager in the right circle and he ripped a snap shot past Sim to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
REG 1-2 at 9:59 – Stanislav Svozil (1), assisted by Alexander Suzdalev and Layton Feist // Svozil’s wrist shot deflected, somehow bounced through bodies and past Jackson Unger to get the Pats on the board down just 2-1.
MJ 1-3 at 12:57 – Denton Mateychuk (2), assisted by Robert Baco // On a Pats turnover in their own end, Baco grabbed the puck and sent a pass to Mateychuk in the slot and he made no mistake and fired it top shelf over Sim to restore the Warriors two-goal lead at 3-1.
MJ 1-4 at 17:30 – Tate Schofer (2), assisted by Nathan Pilling and Maximus Wanner // On yet another Pats turnover, Schofer found himself alone in front of Sim. He had multiple cracks at the puck and he eventually was able to get it past the Pats goalkeeper to give the Warriors a 4-1 lead late in the first period.
Second Period
MJ 1-5 at 5:43 – Cole Jordan (2), assisted by Denton Mateychuk and Nathan Pilling // The Pats were caught flatfooted and the Warriors took advantage as Mateychuk went for a skate around the zone and fed a cross-ice pass to Jordan who buried his second of the game to give the Warriors a 5-1 lead early in the second.
REG 2-5 at 7:04 – Connor Bedard (10), assisted by Parker Berge and Tanner Brown // Berge’s long shot was stopped by Unger but he had trouble finding the rebound which Bedard scooped up and put it past the Warriors goalie to get the Pats to within three at 5-2.
Third Period
No Scoring.
