Victoria Will Start a Five Game Homestand on Tuesday Night
October 11, 2022 – Western Hockey League (WHL) – Victoria Royals News Release
Victoria, B.C. – The Victoria Royals will return to the Island as they welcome the Kelowna Rockets to town for a pair of matchups on Tuesday and Wednesday during Industry Night presented by Granville Island Brewing. Both games will include $15 tickets and $5 Granville Island beer all night.
Despite early season difficulties, the Royals showed some positive signs in their last two games as they wrapped up their road trip against the Kamloops Blazers last weekend.
While the two contests ended in a loss, Victoria put in a strong effort and would keep it close heading into the third on both nights before the Blazers pulled away late, winning 5-2 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday.
Forward Matthew Hodson enjoyed a pair of fine performances against Kamloops, scoring his first and second goals of the year to put him in a tie for the team lead in scoring. Additionally, the team was buoyed on Saturday night by Goaltender Tyler Palmer, who earned second star honours with a 39 save performance.
Both players will look to keep the positive momentum going this week against the Rockets.
Kelowna has enjoyed mixed results this season and currently sits in the middle of the pack with a 2-2-1 record on the season. They have recorded wins over Victoria and the Prince George Cougars and suffered defeats at the hands of the Seattle Thunderbirds, Portland Winterhawks and Prince George.
Kelowna boasts one of the top scoring duos in the league with reigning WHL Rookie of the Year Andrew Cristall and Czechia-born import pick Gabriel Szturc. Both players have recorded 11 total points on the season, with Szturc counting four goals and seven assists and Cristall with five goals and six assists.
With 20-year-old Rockets goaltender Talyn Boyko’s status still unclear as he remains listed on a ECHL roster, Kelowna will continue to lean on 2004-born netminder Jari Kyykanen to man the posts.
The Lloydminster, AB product has been solid in his five starts this year, posting a goals against average of 3.84 and a 0.885 save percentage. He has also recorded one shutout on the season, coming in a 3-0 victory over the Royals back on Oct. 5
The first game of the week is set to get underway at 7:05 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 11, with game two beginning at the same time on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Both will be played at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Downtown Victoria. Tickets are available at selectyourtickets.com.
