Tri-City Defeats Des Moines in Exhibition Contest

SIOUX CITY, IA – The Tri-City Storm defeated the Des Moines Buccaneers by a final score of 4-2 Friday afternoon at the Tyson Events Center to improve to 2-0-0-0 in preseason play. Cameron O’Neill netted a hat trick during the game for the Storm. Brock James also scored a goal for Tri-City. Karlis Mezsargs backstopped the Storm to victory in net. Tri-City will play one additional game in this year’s USHL West Preseason Showcase event hosted by the Sioux City Musketeers tomorrow afternoon. The Storm will face the Fargo Force at 1:00pm CT.


Cameron O’Neill netted his first goal of the game, and first goal of the preseason at 9:05 of Friday’s 1st period to put Tri-City ahead by one goal. Kieran Cebrian and Dane Dowiak each notched an assist on the scoring play. The Buccaneers answered with a goal less than one minute later to bring the game to a 1-1 tie. Jak Vaarwerk scored his first goal of the preseason at 9:57 of the period for Des Moines. Vaarwerk’s goal was assisted by Aiden Vanrooyan and Chase Ramsay. Cameron O’Neill notched his second goal of the afternoon with thirty-one seconds to play in the 1st period to give the Storm a 2-1 lead. O’Neill’s second goal of the contest was netted at 19:29 of the 1st period and was assisted by Dane Dowiak and Gennadii Chalyi. Tri-City outshot Des Moines 13-7 in the opening period, and carried a one-goal lead into the 2nd period.

Brock James scored the only goal in Friday’s 2nd period for the Storm. The goal was netted at 7:45 of the period and was assisted by Gennadii Chalyi and Artemi Nizameyev. The Storm outshot the Buccaneers 10-6 in the 2nd period, and the team led 3-1 entering the 3rd period.

Aiden Vanrooyan scored a goal at 14:07 of the 3rd period to bring the Buccaneers within one goal of the Storm’s lead. The final goal of Friday’s exhibition contest was scored into an empty net by Cameron O’Neill. O’Neill’s hat trick goal was notched with less than a second remaining in the game and was assisted by Kieran Cebrian. The Storm outshot the Buccaneers 10-8 in the 3rd period, and 33-21 overall in the game.

Karlis Mezsargs stopped 19 of Des Moines’ 21 shots on goal to record the win in goal for Tri-City. Jan Korec stopped 29 of Tri-City’s 32 shots on net and picked up the loss in net for Des Moines.
