September 13, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Toronto FC News Release
Toronto FC announced today that the club has signed forward Hugo Mbongue to a Homegrown contract through 2025 with an option for 2026. Mbongue becomes the 31st player in club history to sign for the first team from the Toronto FC Academy.
“Hugo is a talented young striker who has worked hard to improve his overall game,” said Toronto FC Head Coach and Sporting Director Bob Bradley. “We look forward to seeing Hugo’s progress in his professional career and are confident that he’s going to become a player who can help the first team for many years.”
Mbongue, 18, signed an MLS NEXT Pro contract with Toronto FC II in May 2022, and since joining the Young Reds, Mbongue has scored four goals while tallying five assists in 14 appearances (11 starts) during the inaugural MLS NEXT Pro regular season. Mbongue scored his first professional goal for the Young Reds against New York City FC II on April 10, 2022. The Canadian forward previously made his professional debut against North Texas SC on May 22, 2021 and appeared in 10 matches for TFC II during the 2021 USL League One regular season.
Prior to the Young Reds, Mbongue represented Toronto FC Academy across the U-15, U-16, U-17 and U-19 age groups from 2018 to 2021. In 2019, Mbongue led the U-15 squad to the U.S. Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) National Championship in San Diego, California. Mbongue was awarded the USSDA U-15 Golden Boot after scoring four goals during the team’s run to the championship, including two in the dramatic come-from-behind finale against Los Angeles FC. Earlier in 2019, the Toronto native led the U-15 squad to the Generation adidas Cup Finals and was the tournament’s Golden Boot winner in Frisco, Texas. Mbongue originally joined the Toronto FC Academy in March 2018 after spending time with North Toronto Soccer Club and Clairlea-Westview Soccer Club.
At the international level, Mbongue has represented the Canada Under-20 Men’s National Team, including making three appearances at the 2022 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Honduras. He also represented the Canada Under-15 National Team at the 2019 CONCACAF Boys’ Under-15 Championship in Florida, USA, where he scored four goals in four appearances.
