Rockland County, NY – The Ottawa Titans rode a gem on the mound from Zac Westcott and downed the host New York Boulders 8-2 on Wednesday at Clover Stadium in Pomona in the Frontier League Eastern Division Wild Card Game.
Westcott allowed only two hits through seven innings before getting touched up in the eighth for a one-out double by Tucker Nathans, followed by a Ray Hernandez home run. Westcott then retired Max Smith on a groundball to second before being relieved by Kyle Serrano.
In 7 2/3 innings of work, Westcott surrendered two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out four. He needed 99 pitches to get through the 7 2/3 innings, 69 of which were strikes.
After Serrano got the last out of the eighth inning, Titans’ closer Kevin Escorcia finished out the game with a perfect ninth inning.
The Titans touched up Boulders’ starter July Sosa for a pair of first inning runs and added a single tally in the second to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead.
In the first inning, after a lead off walk to Jackie Urbaez, Rodrigo Orozco hit a two-run home run to right field. An inning later, A.J. Wright added an RBI single to give Ottawa their three-run lead,
Ottawa tacked on three runs in the fourth off New York reliever Dan Wirchansky on an RBI double by Clay Fisher, a run-scoring single from Orozco and a wild pitch that allowed Urbaez to scoot home.
The Titans made it 8-0 with a pair of runs in the seventh against Leo Pineda, the fourth of six Boulders’ pitchers used in the game by manager T.J. Stanton, the runs coming on a single by Jason Dicochea and a double by Wright.
Sosa took the loss for the Boulders, while Westcott got the win. The victory advanced the Titans to the Eastern Division Championship series where they will face the first-place Quebec Capitales in a best-of-three series that will begin in Ottawa on Friday, then continue in Quebec on Saturday and, if necessary, Sunday.
