The Aftermath: Storm Opens Preseason with 6-3 Win

SIOUX CITY, IA – The Tri-City Storm opened the 2022-2023 preseason with a three-goal victory over the Waterloo Black Hawks at the Tyson Events Center Thursday night. The Storm rallied after falling behind by two goals during the 1st period to secure the victory. Daimon Gardner (2), Nick Roukounakis, Sebastian Törnqvist, Phillipe Blais-Savoie, and David Sacco all netted goals for the Storm in the victory. Sebastian Wraneschitz stopped 29 of Waterloo’s 32 shots on net to notch the win in net for Tri-City. The Storm will return to action tomorrow afternoon in a matchup against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Puck drop for the game is scheduled for 1:00pm CT.


Grayson Badger scored the opening goal of the matchup at 7:26 of the 1st period to give Waterloo a one-goal lead. Badger’s goal was assisted by Aiden Shirey, and Tyler Procious. Waterloo netted another goal just over one minute later to take a two-goal lead in the game. The Black Hawk’s second goal of the contest was scored by Gavin Thoreson at 8:32 of the 1st period. Garrett Schifsky provided the lone assist on the play. Waterloo outshot Tri-City 8-5 and carried a 2-0 lead into Thursday’s 2nd period.

Nick Roukounakis netted the Storm’s first goal of the preseason at 5:41 of the 2nd period to cut the Black Hawks’ lead in half. Cale Ashcroft recorded an assist on the play. Daimon Gardner scored his first goal of the game at 13:37 of the 2nd period to bring the score to a 2-2 tie. Gardner’s goal was assisted by Tanner Adams. Sebastian Törnqvist gave the Storm a 3-2 lead at 14:11 of the 2nd period. Daimon Gardner notched an assist on the play. The final goal of Thursday’s 2nd period was netted by Philippe Blais-Savoie. The goal was scored at 16:31 of the period and was assisted by Ryan Smith. Tri-City outshot Waterloo 8-7 in the 2nd period, and the team carried a two-goal advantage into the 3rd period.

Waterloo cut into Tri-City’s lead in the opening two minutes of Thursday’s 3rd period with a goal scored by Gavin Thoreson. Thoreson’s goal was his second of the game and was assisted by Nicholas Degraves. David Sacco put the Storm in front by two goals at 13:39 of the 3rd period by deflecting a shot from Sebastian Törnqvist. The goal gave the Storm a 5-3 lead. The final goal of Tri-City’s opening game of the exhibition schedule was scored by Daimon Gardner into an empty net with just over one minute remaining in the contest. Waterloo elected to pull goaltender Owen Millward for an extra attacker and surrender the game’s final goal as a result. Tanner Adams and Samo Meritähti each recorded an assist on Gardner’s second goal of the night.

Owen Millward recorded the loss in goal for Waterloo after making 14 saves on 19 shots during the exhibition matchup. Sebastian Wraneschitz backstopped the Storm to victory with a 29-save-on-32-shot performance.
