Teddy Spitznagel Commits to the University of Michigan

MUSKEGON, Mich. – The Muskegon Lumberjacks have announced that forward Teddy Spitznagel has committed to the University of Michigan. The New York, N.Y. native will become the seventh Lumberjack in team history to commit to the Michigan Wolverines.


Spitznagel, the 6-foot-1, 160-pound forward appeared in 21 games with Honeybaked 15U during the 2021-22 season, totaling 12 goals and six assists for 18 points. The Lumberjacks drafted Spitznagel with their first pick in the second round of the 2022 USHL Phase I Draft, 17th overall.

“We’re really proud and excited for Teddy and his NCAA commitment to Michigan,” said Lumberjacks President of Hockey Operations Steve Lowe. “Teddy’s growth and commitment to hockey are starting to pay off, and we couldn’t be prouder to see him commit to a big-time college hockey program.”

“I’d like to thank my parents, [Lumberjacks GM] Jim McGroarty, and all the coaches who have helped me along the way,” said Spitznagel. “It’s been a childhood dream my whole life and it’s an honor to continue my hockey career in the future at the University of Michigan.”

“Huge congrats to Teddy and his family for committing to Michigan,” said Lumberjacks Head Coach Mike Hamilton. “Teddy is a driven and hardworking young man and we’re excited to have him as part of the Muskegon Lumberjacks as well as see his growth on and off the ice.”

The University of Michigan is no stranger to players from the Muskegon pipeline. In recent years, the Lumberjacks have sent numerous players to Ann Arbor, including Max Shuart, Alex Talcott, Joe Cecconi, Cooper Marody, Garrett Van Whye, and John Druskinis.

The Lumberjacks kick off the 2022-23 season with the annual DICK’S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic against the Sioux Falls Stampede and the defending Anderson Cup champions Tri-City Storm on Sept. 22 and 23, respectively. Flannel Fest, Muskegon’s annual home-opening tradition, returns for its second year on Friday, Sept. 30. Fans can enjoy face painting, live music, axe throwing, food trucks, and more. The party will continue into Trinity Health Arena as the Lumberjacks take on the Chicago Steel, with more axe throwing during the intermission. Tickets are now on sale and can be made available for purchase.
