Storm Set to Battle Black Hawks

WATERLOO, IA. – The Tri-City Storm is set to battle the Waterloo Black Hawks tonight at Young Arena following last night’s thrilling 4-3 shootout victory over the Omaha Lancers at Liberty First Credit Union Arena. Tonight’s matchup is the first meeting between the Storm and the Black Hawks in this year’s six-game season series. Puck drop for tonight’s battle between Tri-City and Waterloo is scheduled for 6:05pm CT.


Tri-City (3-0-0-0) posted a shootout victory in last night’s road game against the Omaha Lancers to begin play this weekend. Brock James, Cameron O’Neill, and Kieran Cebrian each notched a goal during regulation time for the Storm. Arvega Hovsepyan and Graham Gamache scored for Tri-City during the shootout. The Storm fell behind by a goal in the opening three minutes of the game, but the team roared back to take the lead after the 1st period. After jumping on the scoreboard just over one minute into Friday’s 2nd period to take a 3-1 lead in the game, Tri-City surrendered back-back-to-back goals to Omaha to bring the game to a 3-3 tie. The Storm outshot the Lancers 34-28 in the game, and outscored the Lancers 2-0 in the shootout. Goal scorers for Tri-City through the opening three games of the 2022-2023 regular season include Kieran Cebrian (3), Graham Gamache (2), Cameron O’Neill, Tanner Adams, Trevor Connelly, David Sacco, Nick Roukounakis, Sebastian Törnqvist, Brock James, and Cale Ashcroft. Tri-City holds a 13-5-3-0 record in head-to-head matchups against Waterloo over the past five seasons. The Storm won five of six games played against the Black Hawks last year. Following back-to-back road games this weekend, Tri-City will return to action next weekend with a road game and a home game, each against in-state rival Lincoln.

Waterloo (1-2-0-0) hosts Tri-City tonight for the team’s annual Home Opener at Young Arena. The Black Hawks opened the 2022-2023 regular season with a three-goal victory over the Youngstown Phantoms at the 2022 DICK’s Sporting Goods Fall Classic on September 24th. Waterloo has since dropped back-to-back games against Team USA and the Des Moines Buccaneers and will look for a bounce-back victory tonight against Tri-City. Waterloo dropped a 3-2 decision to Team USA on September 25th in the team’s second game at the Fall Classic. The Black Hawks fell by a final score of 4-3 to the Des Moines Buccaneers one week ago. Goal scorers for the Black Hawks entering tonight’s home game against the Storm include Gavin Lindberg (2), Griffin Erdman (2), Myles Hilman (2), Gavyn Thoreson, Keith McInnis, Aaron Pionk, and Garrett Schifsky. Emmett Croteau has appeared in all three games in net for Waterloo to this point in the regular season. Tonight’s game against the Storm is the only game this weekend for the Black Hawks. Waterloo will return to action next weekend with a home game against the Omaha Lancers on Friday, October 14th, and a road game against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Saturday, October 15th. The Black Hawks completed the 2021-2022 regular season with a final record of 28-30-3-1. The team was the 6th and final team to qualify for the 2022 Clark Cup Playoffs in the Western Conference. The Black Hawks defeated the Lincoln Stars in the opening round of the postseason before falling to the eventual Clark Cup Champion Sioux City Musketeers in the conference semifinal rounds of the playoffs.
