Steel Suffer First Loss of Season, Fall 2-1 against Green Bay
October 1, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL) – Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS — The Chicago Steel (3-1-0-0; 6 pts.) saw their three game season-
opening winning streak come to an end, falling 2-1 to the Green Bay Gamblers (2-2-0-0; 4 pts.)
Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena.
Despite scoring on the power play for a fourth consecutive night, the Steel could not reach the
back of the net on four additional chances including a prolonged 5-on-3 late in the middle frame.
Gamblers goals were scored by Artyom Levshunov and Matthew DiMarsico as Steel
defenseman Jake Livanavage tallied the only goal of the night for Chicago.
The Steel weren’t short on chances as Nick Moldenhauer was sent in alone early in the first with
a chance to get the Steel on the board. The Toronto Maple Leafs prospect made a move to his
backhand and got Gamblers netminder Kristoffer Eberly down but Moldenhauer sent the puck
above the crossbar.
Just past the midway point of the first, a strange sequence opened the door for Green Bay to
jump in front.
Steel rookie defenseman Michael Hagens ‘ helmet was jarred loose mid-play and the blueliner
was forced to return to the bench for a change. As Hagens went for a change, Green Bay broke
in on a 2-on-1 which was initially stopped by Stark but Levshunov followed up the play, banking
in a rebound f
or the game’s first goal.
Jake Livanavage pulled the Steel even with his first goal of the year late in the first.
After Jayden Perron entered the zone with blazing speed, Cameron Johnson tapped a pass
back to Livanavage who unleashed a one-timer from the point that rocketed past traffic in front
of the crease. The power play marker extended Chicago’s season-opening streak to four
consecutive games with a goal on the man advantage.
Green Bay jumped in front with a nice passing play from Jayson Shaugabay as the University of
Minnesota-Duluth commit sent a pass from near his own end line to Matthew DiMarsico alone in
the slot. DiMarsico took advantage of space at the top of the crease, beating Stark for his first of
the year.
The defining moment of the game came late in the second period and early into the third as the
Steel were awarded a 5-on-3 power play.
Steel defenseman Nolan Joyce, fresh off a two-goal game Friday night against Muskegon, had
two opportunities just a few feet from the doorstep but was turned away by Eberly on both
chances, keeping Green Bay in front.
Starting the third period on the power play, Green Bay successfully cancelled out the remainder
of the shorthanded stretch but were whistled for an infraction less than a minute into the period,
giving Chicago another chance on the man advantage.
Eberly once again had an answer for multiple Steel chances as he kept his team in front.
A shift from Nick Moldenhauer, Jayden Perron and Cameron Johnson midway through the third
produced
Chicago’s best scoring chances of the period as they hemmed in the Gamblers for
over a minute, controlling possession in the offensive zone, but could not come away with a
goal.
A couple of late Chicago penalties hurt the home team’s comeback chances as the Gamblers
held on for the 2-1 win, handing Chicago its first loss of the season.
The Steel return to home ice Friday, October 7 against the Dubuque Fighting Saints at 7:05 pm
with a Magnet Schedule Giveaway for the first 500 fans in attendance.
