Steel Capture 3-2 Presason Victory over Muskegon
September 10, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL) – Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS – In front of a crowed packed with youth hockey players from across the country in town for the Steel Icebreaker tournament, the Chicago Steel prevailed in a 3-2 victory Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena over the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
Taking the lead in the first period was Steel defenseman Thor Byfuglien who scored the first goal from a Steel blueliner during the 2022 preseason, whistling a wrister over the glove of Muskegon goaltender Noah Rupprecht.
Muskegon evened the score late in the first to prevent Chicago taking a lead to the dressing room. Defenseman Easton Young scored his first goal of the preseason to tie the game 1-1 just minutes before the conclusion of the first period.
Similar to Friday night’s action, Cameron Johnson and Chris Delaney provided separation from the Lumberjacks in the second period.
Johnson netted his second of the preseason just under two minutes into the period. Off a line rush, Steel forward Nick Molendenhaur made an outstanding pass to Macklin Celebrini whose shot was followed by Johnson for the goal.
Delaney expanded the lead to 3-1 in favor of the Steel with his second goal in as many exhibition contests. Picking up the puck off the left half boards, Delaney took a sharp-angle attack and perfectly placed the puck top shelf on the near side of Rupprecht.
Fighting back to get within one goal in the third period, Lumberjacks forward George Fergeras potted his first of the preseason but the late push was not enough as Steel netminder Christian Manz helped shut the door with a handful of his 26 saves to record the victory between the pipes.
The Steel conclude the preseason slate with a pair of games against the Youngstown Phantoms on Friday, Sep. 16 and Saturday, Sep. 17 at Fox Valley Ice Arena at 7:05 pm CT.
