The Calgary Stampeders return home from a successful trip to the West Coast to take on the hottest team in the Canadian Football League on Saturday at McMahon Stadium.
On the heels of a 25-11 victory at BC that allowed them to improve their record to 9-5, the Stamps face the Toronto Argonauts. The East Division-leading Argos (8-5) carry a four-game winning streak into the game including last week’s 45-15 thumping of the Ottawa Redblacks.
The Stampeders are 3-3 at home this season and 4-0 against the East Division. The Argos are 4-2 on the road and 2-3 against the West.
The Stampeders need one more victory to assure themselves of a winning season. Heading into 2022, the Stamps have finished above .500 in 13 consecutive seasons and if they can extend the streak, they’ll tie a CFL record set by Edmonton in the 1980s and 1990s.
This is the second meeting of the season between the Stamps and Argos as the Red and White rallied for a 22-19 win at Toronto’s BMO Field on Aug. 20. Down 16-10 at halftime, Calgary was ignited by a pick-six by Elie Bouka and the performance of quarterback Jake Maier, who completed 14 of 18 second-half passes in a relief role.
Saturday’s contest features a pair of the CFL’s offensive leaders as Calgary’s Ka’Deem Carey is No. 1 in the league with 857 rushing yards while Toronto’s McLeod Bethel-Thompson is first in passing yards with 3,672.
From a team perspective, the Stampeders are averaging a league-best 30.9 points scored per game while the Argonauts are the second-stingiest defensive team in the CFL with 22.5 points allowed per contest.
This will be the 100th regular-season matchup all time between the Stampeders and Argonauts and it comes almost exactly 61 years after the first. On Sept. 29, 1961, in the CFL’s first season of regular-season inter-divisional play, the Argos defeated the Stamps 22-19 at Toronto’s Exhibition Stadium. Calgary’s first win in the series came in 1963 as the Stamps drubbed the Boatmen 50-0 in Toronto.
The Stamps lead the all-time series 55-43-1 thanks in large part to a 12-game winning streak against the Argos between 2014 and 2019.
Celebration of Women in Sport
The Stamps on Saturday are proud to announce a Celebration of Women in Sport, presented by Mayfair Diagnostics.
The evening features special guests throughout the evening who will visit with host Natasha Staniszewski, a group of Girl Guides to help welcome the Stamps onto the field prior to the game and a group of young female football players holding the Canadian flag during the national anthem.
At halftime, two teams from the Western Women’s Canadian Football League – the Calgary Rage and the Lethbridge Steel – will play on the McMahon turf.
