Spitfires Survive Wolves’ Push and Win 5-4

October 7, 2022 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL)Windsor Spitfires News Release

WINDSOR, ON. The Spitfires gave the crowd a big scare on Thursday evening as they saw a 4-0 lead dwindle in the dying minutes of the game. With just over eight minutes left in the third period Sudbury would score 4 goals and the Spits would find an empty net to win 5-4.

In the first period, the Spitfires dominated the shot clock outshooting the Wolves 21-6. The Spitfires got on the board first, a Bronson Ride point shot was deflected on net, Spellacy tried to tap it in but was stopped and then Peer buried the rebound for his first on the season. Just 7 minutes later, the Spitfires doubled their lead as the Spits took advantage of a d-zone turnover. Abraham passed it to Christopoulos who found O’Flaherty open in front and he back-handed the puck through the five-hole for his first on the season.

In the second period, the Spitfires would extend their lead to 3-0 late in the frame. On the powerplay for just 4 seconds, Malliet won the faceoff to DeAngelis and he passed it to Renwick who one-timed it into the net.

In the third period, the Spitfires would score an empty net goal with 8 minutes and 7 seconds left in the game. Christopoulos scored his first goal of the season unassisted. With a commanding 4-0 lead everyone thought this one was over but it was far from it. The Wolves would score 3 unanswered goals in just 3 minutes and 22 seconds. The fans were on the edge of their seats. With just 27 seconds Peer would steal the puck off the defender and go down the ice to make it a 5-3 game. However, the Wolves weren’t done yet. Just 12 seconds after that they would score to make it 5-4. The Spitfires would win the ensuing faceoff and hold the puck in the corner for a crucial win and two points.

The Spitfires are back in action on Saturday as they travel to Saginaw for their first away contest of the season. Puck drop is at 7:05pm. The Spitfires then return to the WFCU Centre on Thanksgiving Monday for a 2:05pm game vs the Soo.
