Special Teams Hinder Rangers in Kingston Sunday
October 9, 2022 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) – Kitchener Rangers News Release
Kingston, Ont. – The Frontenacs recorded three power-play goals on five opportunities Sunday en-route to a 5-2 victory over the Rangers in a Thanksgiving Sunday matinee. Kitchener had a 2-1 lead after the first period and finished the game with a 29-28 shot-advantage but were unable to find the victory.
It was a quick start for the home team tonight who opened the scoring 4:34 into the first period. Francesco Arcuri (Dallas Stars) benefited from a back door pass which found him all alone at the right circle where he was staring down an empty 4×6 frame. The Rangers had a couple opportunities with the man advantage in the period, but as their third powerplay expired, Kitchener equalized at 15:26. Trent Swick carried the puck through the middle of the ice across the blueline, taking a check to make a pass to forward Reid Valade who wristed a shot from the right dot across his body beating rookie netminder, Mason Vaccari over the blocker. Just 50 seconds later, Kitchener took the lead. Simon Motew took advantage of space in front of him, walked into the high slot and ripped a shot over the glove of the Kingston goalie. The first period ended with Kitchener Infront 2-1 and shots favouring the Blueshirts 10-6.
Special teams were the difference in the second period. Kitchener took two quick minor penalties that sent Kingston to the 5-on-3 advantage. 34 seconds into the two-man advantage at 4:24 of the second period, Kingston equalized. Francesco Arcuri (Dallas Stars) scored his second goal of the game as he carried the puck from the right faceoff dot up to the high slot and scored past the out-stretched blocker of Jackson Parsons. Just over a minute later, still on the man advantage, Kingston took the lead on Jacob Battaglia’s first career OHL goal. At 5:29, a slot shot was stopped by Jackson Parsons off the left pad, but the rebound deflected to Jacob Battaglia’s stick and just had to tap it home. The period ended with Kingston leading 3-2 and shots favouring the Frontenacs 19-17.
Kingston struck early into the final frame, just 17 seconds in, by Forward Linus Hemström. His tough angle shot from the bottom of the right circle squeezed through the arm of Jackson Parsons doubling their lead to 4-2. Another powerplay goal at 16:19 of the third period extended their lead to 5-2. A cross ice pass from Owen Outwater was received by Paul Hughes and wristed back across goal off the post and in beating Parsons blocker side. The final scored of the game was 5-2 Kingston.
Kitchener finished the game on the powerplay 0/5 and 2/5 on the penalty kill. Final shots favoured the Rangers 29-28. All three stars of the game were awarded to the Kingston Frontenacs.
