Same Voice, New Title for Harwood

Waterloo, Iowa – Waterloo Black Hawks radio broadcaster Tim Harwood has been named the organization’s new Vice President of Communication, the team announced Friday.
Harwood is preparing for his 18th season of Black Hawks games after joining the club in 2005. His commentary can be heard on Coloff Media stations – primarily 1650-AM “The Fan” – as well as the United States Hockey League’s new video streaming service, FloSports. The Black Hawks’ first 2022/23 game is this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Central against the Youngstown Phantoms.
“I am really appreciative this vote of confidence from a team which has given me so many opportunities already,” said Harwood, adding, “I’ve had the chance to be there for three Anderson Cup celebrations, four Clark Cup finals, an international trip to the Junior Club World Cup, and more than 1,000 regular season games. More important than any of that has been serving as a source for the Black Hawks’ great fans to stay connected with the amazing players who come to the Cedar Valley on their way to hockey’s highest levels.”
Saturday will mark 17 years to the day since Harwood’s first hockey broadcast, a 4-3 Waterloo road win against the Green Bay Gamblers. At that time, the Hawks were taking a gamble on the 2002 graduate of Valparaiso University. Although he had a variety of sportscasting experience, Harwood had never previously had the opportunity to cover a hockey team. In the years which followed, the Black Hawks offered other assignments, including content creation for waterlooblackhawks.com, sales responsibilities, and media relations duties.
In 2011 – in time for the 50th season of hockey in Waterloo – Harwood completed his first book, a survey of team history called Black Hawks Chronicle; Five Decades of Teams, Games, and Players. He has since written three other books about Waterloo sports history and is currently collaborating on a project with retired Iowa State hockey coach Al Murdoch about hockey on the ISU campus. Murdoch’s memoir is expected to be available this winter.
Beyond hockey, Harwood can also be heard weekday mornings from 6 to 8 a.m. as a host of the KXEL Morning News on News/Talk 1540 KXEL-AM. He covers select University of Northern Iowa soccer games through ESPN’s streaming channels. He also periodically contributes articles to Iowa History Journal, including a story in the magazine’s current September/October edition called “Mechanizing the Doughnut” about Waterloo’s Gem Manufacturing Company, which revolutionized commercial doughnut production beginning in 1904.
Saturday’s season-opening Black Hawks broadcast will be carried on Coloff Media’s Cruisin’ KCFI (1250 AM and 105.1 FM) with pregame coverage beginning at 1:10 p.m.
Also today, the Black Hawks announced that Vice President of Sales Parish Mason will be leaving the organization to pursue a new opportunity outside of hockey. Mason joined the Black Hawks in 2019. He played a significant role as the team navigated social distancing challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and was a key figure in the team’s transition to Igniter tickets.
