Royals Fall in Friday Night Battle with Broncos
October 28, 2022 – Western Hockey League (WHL) – Victoria Royals News Release
Swift Current, SK – Victoria Royals forward Brayden Schuurman scored his first goal of the season in a 6-1 loss at the hands of the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night.
The game also saw Royals goaltender Logan Cunningham make his first career WHL start, stopping 20 of 26 shots faced in the loss.
Forward Raphael Pelletier was the top performer for Swift Current on Friday, collecting three points on two goals and one assist to lead the Broncos to their fourth win of the season.
Starting goaltender Joey Rocha also came up big for Swift Current in his second career appearance, saving all but one of the 22 shots he faced.
Schuurman would give Victoria (2-10-2-0) an early 1-0 lead with his first of the season at the 10:37 mark of the first period. The 19-year-old has played in just three games this year after being kept out of the first 11 games with an injury.
Forward Tanner Scott would collect the lone assist on the goal.
However, that was all the offence Victoria could muster as Swift Current (4-7-0-0) would soon knot the game at 1-1 on a short-handed marker by forward Raphael Pelletier (4) at 12:18 of the first.
The game would remain tied until the 3:06 mark of the second when Broncos forward Josh Filmon would score his team’s second short-handed goal of the night, putting Swift Current up 2-1 early in the middle frame.
The Broncos would maintain momentum and take a 3-1 lead on a goal by forward Clarke Caswell at 5:50. That would soon be followed by Pelletier’s (5) second goal of the game on the powerplay at 8:18 of the second to hand Swift Current a 4-1 lead midway through the second period.
The Broncos would continue to grow their lead in the third on a pair of goals by forwards Brady Birnie (2) at 7:44 and Josh Davies (1) at 8:02, bringing the score to 6-1 where it would stand at the final buzzer.
Both teams are set to be back on the ice tomorrow night, with the Broncos traveling north to face the Prince Albert Raiders, while the Royals will ride the bus to Medicine Hat for a matchup against the Tigers set to begin at 6 pm PDT at Co-op Place.
The next set of Royals home games will be on Nov. 11 and 12 against the Portland Winterhawks. Tickets can be purchased at selectyourtickets.com.
