FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution II (9-10-5; 33 pts.) fell to Philadelphia Union II (11-9-4; 40 pts.), 3-1, in its season finale on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium. Forward Weverton and Homegrown midfielder Damian Rivera led the team with three shots on target, as midfielder Ryan Lima scored his fourth goal of the season in the match.
Philadelphia scored three times in the first half to secure a swift lead. New England saw a penalty kick opportunity after Weverton drew a foul in the box. The Brazilian striker took the shot in the 42nd minute, but Philadelphia’s Matt Freese made the save as New England would head into half time down by three.
Revolution II got on the scoreboard in the 79th minute as Rivera moved around three Union defenders to serve the ball to Lima, who sailed a left-footed shot into the top right corner of the net. New England saw one more scoring opportunity in the 85th minute from Rivera but would ultimately fall in the match by a score of 3-1.
Revolution II’s season comes to an end as the team closes out their 2022 MLS NEXT Pro campaign in seventh place with 33 points.

New England Revolution II Head Coach Clint Peay
On team’s overall performance this season:
Peay: “I would say the season was a little disappointing as it relates to results obviously, but I think we’re happy with how we were able to give some young players significant minutes and progress them along in their development process.”
On Sean O’Hearn playing center midfield for the first time in today’s match:
Peay: “Well we were short there in that role, and we just felt [Sean O’Hearn] would be the best candidate to fill that role for us today.”
On Pierre Cayet’s development as a leader this season:
Peay: “[Pierre Cayet] has been tremendous for us. He’s grown, he’s become a great leader. He takes it from the coaching staff and he’s able to kind of be thick skinned and be able to deliver the hard messages that we as a staff give to the team and he’s a fighter and kept fighting all year, so tremendous growth from him. He’s been a great defender for us, good leader, just can’t say enough.”

On how he feels the group developed over the course of the season:
Cayet: “Personally, I feel like I’ve developed myself really well. I think I started to understand what the coach asked of me. And I think I was able to take on a leadership role towards the end of the season and contribute offensively as well. And collectively, I think we had a great start to the season. We started having a slow moment halfway through the season and finished a little bit better, but at this level, it’s important to stay consistent and keep that level high, so frustrating right now, but I think everyone put the effort in and we’ve grown as a team.”
On growing into more of a leadership role this season:
Cayet: “I think I understand the game pretty well, and Coach [Clint Peay] really trusts me and from a center back position, it’s important to be able to lead the guys in front of me. The guys have been really respecting me and listening to my inputs in the game, and I think I’ve been able to contribute to the team’s success a little bit more. That’s all I can ask.”
On what he’ll remember about playing with this season’s Revs II team:
Cayet: “This is always a moment of the season where we reflect on the past and we see who’s staying and who’s not, but I think at the end of the day we are a team. I think we built great relationships. They’re going to last longer than the actual season, so I’m happy to sort of build friendships on and off the field.”
