September 5, 2022 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) – Kitchener Rangers News Release
Ayr, Ont. – Adam Zidlicky scored twice, Hunter Brzustewicz recorded his first with the Blueshirts and Marcus Vandenberg made 32 saves leading to a 4-2 victory over the Guelph Storm in front of a capacity crowd Monday at the North Dumfries Community Centre in Ayr.
Zidlicky started the scoring for the Rangers at 7:03 after Ty Hollett secured a loose puck in the Rangers’ zone and head-manned it up the ice to Zidlicky. Zidlicky fired a shot from the top of the left circle that beat the Storm netminder shortside.
Guelph tied the contest at 17:56 on an odd-man rush. Charlie Paquette was able to find the back-of-the-net, far-side, over the left shoulder of Rangers’ netminder Marcus Vandenberg. The game was tied 1-1 and Guelph led in shots 12-9 after 20 minutes.
Kitchener made it 2-1 just 55 seconds into the middle frame when Hunter Brzustewicz intercepted a clearing attempt from the Storm, walked in and scored top-shelf, over the Storm netminder’s left shoulder. Zidlicky then scored his second of the game on a 4-on-4 play, lighting the lamp shortside, on a shot from the goal line at 7:53 to earn the Rangers a 3-1 lead after two periods.
Marcus Vandenberg made a highlight-reel save at 9:33 of the final frame to keep the Rangers ahead by two. The Storm came within one at 9:43 on a shot from the right point but Roman Schmidt sealed the game with an empty net goal from centre ice with 23 seconds remaining.
Kitchener was 7-for-8 on the penalty-kill and 1-for-3 on the power-play. Guelph outshot the Rangers 34-20.
Next up, the Rangers will host the Barrie Colts Friday for the third-of-six pre-season games on the docket. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.
