Head-to-Head:
Kitchener comes into tonight’s matchup with Sudbury owning a 5-2-1-2 record against the wolves over their last 10 meetings. Since the 2015-16 regular season, Kitchener has not lost in regulation at The Aud against the wolves posting a 3-0-1-1 record. In those five games, the Blueshirts are outscoring the Wolves 28-13 for an average goals per game of 5.6-2.6. The Rangers are more than doubling their opponent on the score sheet at home over the past 5 seasons.
Since last year’s schedule only consisted of same-conference opponents, this will be Sudbury’s first trip to The Aud in more than three years since October 14, 2019. Kitchener came away with a 7-3 victory in that game with captain Francesco Pinelli (Los Angeles Kings) recording two assists.
Most recently, the Rangers posted a 6-2 victory on home-ice on Sunday over the Flint Firebirds at The Aud. Sudbury recorded a 4-3 overtime victory over Peterborough at home and is 2-2-1 in their last five games. The Wolves have needed overtime in their last two consecutive games, winning one and losing the other, both last weekend.
Scouting the Rangers:
Montréal Canadiens first-round draft pick, Filip Mešár (pronounced Fil-lip Meh-Shaar), is expected to make his debut at The Aud with the Kitchener Rangers tonight. He was selected by the Rangers in the first round of the 2021 CHL Import Draft last summer before being tabbed by the Canadiens in the first round, 26th overall, of the most recent NHL Draft this past July. He signed a three-year NHL entry-level contract with Montréal on Jul. 14 and was assigned to the Rangers last Thursday on Oct. 15. Mešár played in three NHL pre-season games with Montréal against the Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs and New Jersey Devils respectively. He also played in one regular-season game with the Laval Rocket, the AHL affiliate of the Canadiens.
Defenceman Hunter Brzustewicz leads the Rangers with seven points (0G, 7A) thanks to a three-assist effort in Kitchener’s victory last Sunday. Carson Rehkopf has the team-lead in goals with four after recording a hat-trick in the same game. Goaltender Marco Costantini (pronounced cos-tan-tee-nee) has been solid since his move from Hamilton to Kitchener. In his two appearances with the East Avenue Blue, he has a 2.55 goals against average and .932 save percentage.
Tomas Hamara (Ottawa Senators), Filip Mešár (Montréal Canadiens), Francesco Pinelli (Los Angeles Kings) and Roman Schmidt (Tampa Bay Lightning) are four Kitchener skaters that are both drafted and signed by their NHL clubs respectively.
Scouting the Wolves:
Forward David Goyette (Seattle Kraken) returns to Sudbury for his second season after leading the club as a rookie with 73 points (33G, 40A) in 66 games played. Goyette is also off to a hot start with 12 points (6G, 6A) in seven games so far this season, tied for fourth-most in the OHL today. Former first-overall pick in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, Quentin Musty, returns for his second season after posting a respectable 31 points (12G, 19A) in 50 games last season. Musty is leading the Wolves with 27 shots on goal and is eligible for the upcoming 2023 NHL entry draft.
Jack Holmes (Dallas Stars) led the way last season for the Wolves on defence posting 34 points (7G 27A) in 63 games. Goaltender Joe Ranger currently has the eighth-best goals against average (2.67) and has a .920 save percentage.
Nolan Collins (Pittsburgh Penguins), Jacob Holmes (Dallas Stars) and David Goyette (Seattle Kraken) are three Wolves skaters that are drafted by their NHL clubs respectively.
