Head-to-head:

These two teams have seen a lot of each other recently playing 27 times over the last three seasons. In those 27 games, Kitchener holds the overall advantage with a 14-10-2-1 record. 13 of those were played at The Aud, the venue for tonight’s matchup. Spanning back to the 2018-19 regular season, Kitchener owns an 3-4-1-0 record at home to Guelph. However, in their last meeting at The Aud, Kitchener did come away with a 3-2 regulation victory. Simon Motew scored the game winner on the power-play, with the Rangers also coming from behind to win that one.

Kitchener enters play Tuesday with the leagues fifth best power-play converting as 23.5% while Guleph enters play at 17th converting at 14.5%. The Rangers kept the Guelph power-play at bay Saturday killing off eight of nine Storm power-play opportunities.

Most recently, these two teams faced off against each other on Saturday night. An entertaining back-and-forth affair saw Kitchener score two unanswered goals in regulation forcing the game into overtime. The Rangers killed 8 of 9 possible penalties. A breakaway save by Parsons allowed Filip Mešár (Montréal Canadiens) to be sent on a breakaway of his own undressing the Guelph netminder to win it 4-3 for Kitchener.

Scouting the Rangers:

The Rangers have a bunch of players coming into tonight’s contest with a hot hand. Hunter Brzustewicz extended his point streak to an impressive seven games from the Rangers blueline recording his 10th assist of the season. Joseph Serpa is the other Rangers players with an extended point streak with five points (4G, 1A) in his last three games. The dymanic forward line of Pinelli-Mešár-Rehkopf continues to dazzle with 11 points in two games since its construction.

Since coming to Kitchener, Filip Mešár (Montréal Canadiens) already has his first career goal and first career game-winning goal. Filip is averaging a three points per game pace early on in his Rangers tenure with six points (3G, 3A) in two games.

Goaltender Marco Costantini has been solid in his first three starts for the East Avenue Blue owning a 2-1-0-0 record with a 2.36 goals against average and 0.929 save percentage. His 0.913 save percentage oveall this season is good for 8th overall amongst all goalies this season. Marco will be looking to follow up a stellar goaltending performance by Jackson Parsons making 33 stops and earning the OHL’s save of the week on his overtime breakaway stop last game.

Tomas Hamara (Ottawa Senators), Filip Mešár (Montréal Canadiens), Francesco Pinelli (Los Angeles Kings) and Roman Schmidt (Tampa Bay Lightning) are four Kitchener skaters that are both drafted and signed by their NHL clubs respectively.

Scouting the Storm:

Defender Michael Buchinger (St. Louis Blues) had an impressive showing last game recording three points (1G, 2A) getting involved in all three of Guelph’s goals. Michael now is up to nine points (2G, 7A) in nine games thus far for Guelph making him the 6th highest scoring defenceman in the league. Sasha Pastujov who was highlighted in the preview prior to Saturday’s contest recorded two goals raising his point totals to seven points (5G, 2A) in six games.

Forward Danny Zhilkin (Winnipeg Jets) enters play second in team points (5G, 3A) and tied with Sasha for the lead in goals. Danny was second on Guelph’s roster last season with 55 points (23G, 32A) in 66 games in his second OHL season. Cam Allen was the third overall pick in the 2021 OHL entry draft and is eligible for the 2023 NHL entry draft in Nashville. Cam is entering his second season for the Storm after finishing second amongst Storm defenders with a +13 plus/minus rating and 37 points (13G, 24A) in 65 games.

Michael Buchinger (St. Louis Blues), Jake Karabela (Washington Capitals), Sasha Pastujov (Anaheim Ducks), Matthew Poitras (Boston Bruins), and Danny Zhilkin (Winnipeg Jets) are the skaters on the Guelph Storm roster that have been drafted by their NHL teams respectively.
