Pats Storm Back, But Fall to Hurricanes 4-3 in a Shootout

Regina, Sask. – The Regina Pats scored three times in the third period for gather a point, but fell 4-3 in a shootout to the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes Sunday afternoon at the Brandt Centre.

Cole Dubinsky, Luke Bateman, and Tanner Howe scored for the Pats who saw their winning streak end at three games. Matthew Kieper got stronger as the game went on, stopping 19 of 22 shots in the loss.


Hayden Smith scored twice for the Hurricanes while Jett Jones added the opener for the Hurricanes. Tyson Zimmer scored the lone goal in the shootout. Harrison Meneghin stopped 21 of 24 Pats blasts and was perfect in the shootout for the win.

First Period

LET 0-1 at 12:49- Jett Jones (3), assisted by Tyson Zimmer and Nolan Bentham // The Hurricanes broke in on a three-on-two and Zimmer found Jones to the left of Matthew Kieper, where Jones fired a wrist shot that beat the Pats goalie high glove side.

LET 0-2 at 16:27 – Hayden Smith (1), assisted by Dustin Renas // Fresh off a Pat turnover, the Hurricanes broke in with numbers. Smith wired a shot high over Kieper to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead late in the first period.

Second Period

LET 0-3 at 11:33 – Hayden Smith (2), assisted by Noah Chadwick and Tristan Zandee // Lethbridge took control 0f a mad scramble in the Pats zone and Chadwick found Smith beside a down-and-out Kieper who tucked it into a wide open cage to give the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead.

Third Period

REG 1-3 at 2:05 – Cole Dubinsky (2), assisted by Tye Spencer and Tanner Brown // The Pats had control in the Hurricanes zone and the puck managed to get to Dubinsky who notched his second of the season to get the Pats on the board now down 3-1.

REG 2-3 at 8:15 – Luke Bateman (1), assisted by Matteo Michels and Jaxsin Vaughan // Michels’ long shot was kicked out by Harrison Meneghin right to Bateman who pinched from the point and put a shot past the Hurricanes goalie to cut the visitors lead to 3-2.

REG 3-3 at 9:34 – Tanner Howe (6), assisted by Connor Bedard and Borya Valis // With the Pats on a partial two-on-one, Bedard outwaited the Hurricanes defender to find Howe in front of Meneghin, making no mistake to tie the game up at 3-3.

NOTES

Tanner Brown picked up his first point with the Pats.

Luke Bateman scored his first of the season, and first goal since November 12, 2021 (fourth career goal).

Connor Bedard extended his point streak to ten games (9G-11A-20PTS). He now leads the team in goals, assists, points, and penalty minutes.

The Pats winning streak ended at three games but now have points in four straight (3-0-0-1) ,while also having won five of their last six (4-1-0-1).

The three goal comeback for the Pats was their larger comeback of the season.

Cole Dubinsky grabbed his 100th career point with his goal tonight.

The Pats’ next action is on Thursday, October 20th when they travel down Highway One for a clash against their Trans-Canada Rival Moose Jaw Warriors.
