Paredes Nominated for Gaudaur Award
October 27, 2022 – Canadian Football League (CFL) – Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce René Paredes is the team’s nominee for the 2022 Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Award. The honour is given annually to the Canadian player who best demonstrates the attributes of the country’s veterans, such as strength, perseverance, courage, comradeship and contribution to Canadian communities.
The award, which has been presented annually since 2010, was created in memory of Jake Gaudaur – the CFL’s longest-standing Commissioner and a distinguished World War II veteran.
In his 11th season with the Red and White, Paredes is the longest-serving member of the team. Earlier this week, he was named as the Stampeders’ top special teams player for the sixth time in his career.
Paredes leads the league with 199 points, 51 field goals and five field goals of at least 50 yards. He’s 44 of 45 on converts and his average of 66.7 yards on regular kickoffs (which excludes onside kicks) is second-best in the league.
Reliability is one of the veteran kicker’s calling cards as he has never missed a game in his 11-year career and he maintains a regular practice schedule despite battling occasional injuries and muscle fatigue.
In addition to his continued excellence on the field, Paredes is in his eighth season as a team captain and serves as mentor to the team’s many first- and second-year players, particularly those on the special-teams unit.
Paredes this season has continued his longstanding tradition of community support. As a year-round resident of Calgary, he takes part in numerous charity events and community functions. In 2022, he once again was a part of the team visits to the Alberta Children’s Hospital, never missing one of the bi-weekly events.
The Telus Future Friendly Foundation, the Educational Partnership Foundation, the Special Olympics and the Calgary Urban Project Society are just some of the other organizations to which Paredes has provided his time and support.
This year’s Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Award recipient – chosen from a field of nine nominees, one from each CFL club – will be honoured during the CFL awards ceremony in Regina on Nov. 17.
