Oil Kings Sign Seven Players to WHL Standard Player Agreements

Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oil Kings have signed seven players to Western Hockey League Standard Player Agreements, the team announced today.

“The Edmonton Oil Kings Organization is excited to welcome a new wave of prospects into our program,” said Oil Kings President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kirt Hill. “Our staff was very excited with training camp and the commitment that players put in over the course of the summer to come and earn Standard Player Agreements.


“This was an important camp for the organization and we are very excited about the future and what all these players will be bringing both on and off the ice as members of our Oil Kings family.”

Of the seven players signed, three are forwards and four are defencemen:

D Ethan MacKenzie (2006-born)

MacKenzie, a West Kelowna, BC product, was originally drafted by the Oil Kings in the fourth round, 82nd overall, of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.

The 5-foot-9, 151-pound rearguard spent last season playing for the Rink Hockey Academy Kelowna U16 program where he had 21 points (7G, 14A) and 22 penalty minutes in 29 games. He added five assists in nine games with RHA Kelowna’s U18 club.

D Rhys Pederson (2006-born)

Pederson, a Stettler, AB native, was originally drafted by the Oil Kings in the fifth round, 90th overall, of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.

The 6-foot-3, 189-pound defenceman played for the Northern Alberta Xtreme U16 Prep club appearing in 32 games tallying 28 points (6G, 22A) and 37 penalty minutes last season. His 28 points was the fifth most amongst all defencemen the CSSHL U16 division. In six additional games with the NAX U18 Prep team he had three points (2G, 1A) and six penalty minutes.

F Treycen Wuttunee (2006-born)

Wuttunee, a Battlefords, SK product, was selected in the 10th round, 221st overall, of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft by the Oil Kings.

The 5-foot-8, 146-pound forward played for the U18 AAA Battlefords Stars last season where he put up 31 points (13G, 18A) and 30 penalty minutes in 43 games.

F Marshall Finnie (2004-born)

Finnie, a Lethbridge, AB native, was listed by the Oil Kings this past May.

The 6-foot-1, 191-pound forward played for the Yale Hockey Academy U18 Prep squad last season where he had 46 points (16G, 30A) and 30 penalty minutes in 30 games.

His younger brother, Emmitt, plays for the Kamloops Blazers.

D Parker Alcos (2006-born)

Alcos, a Port Moody, BC product, was a free agent training camp invite by the Oil Kings.

The 6-foot-1, 158-pound rearguard played last season with the Vancouver NE Chiefs U18 AAA club where he had five points (1G, 4A) and 20 penalty minutes in 31 games. He helped the Chiefs capture the BCEHL U18 Championship and a spot in the 2022 Telus Cup after adding two assists in seven post-season games for the Chiefs.

F Landon Hanson (2006-born)

Hanson, a Grande Prairie, AB native, was listed by the Oil Kings this past February.

The 6-foot, 166-pound forward played last season with the OHA Edmonton U16 Prep team and finished fifth in the CSSHL U16 division scoring race after putting up 62 points (21G, 41A) in 36 games to go along with 28 penalty minutes.

D Reid Larson (2005-born)

Larson, a Calgary, AB product, was drafted by the Oil Kings in the eighth round, 174th overall, at the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft.

The 6-foot-1, 164-pound defenceman spent last season with the Calgary Flames U18 AAA where he had 18 points (4G, 14A) and 34 penalty minutes in 38 games. He added another four points (1G, 3A) in six post-season games with the Flames.

The Oil Kings open their pre-season this Friday when they welcome the Saskatoon Blades to the Downtown Community Arena at 7:00 PM, tickets are $10 at the door.
