Spokane, WA – The Edmonton Oil Kings got 33 saves from Kolby Hay, along with goals from Mason Finley, Shea Van Olm and Cole Miller on their way to a 3-1 win over the Spokane Chiefs on Friday night.

For a second straight game, the Oil Kings came out of the gates hot creating some early scoring chances from Cole Carrier, Finley and Gavin Hodnett, but again were held off the scoreboard in the early going.

The Oil Kings would not be deterred and with just over a minute left in the first period, they got the game’s icebreaker courtesy a tip-in by Finley on the power play for his third goal of the season after he was able change the direction of a perfectly placed Logan Dowhaniuk point-shot.

In the second period, the Chiefs got a couple of chances on the power play to level the score but could not solve the Oil Kings penalty kill or Hay to remain down by one.

Then, with 3:30 left in the middle stanza, the Oil Kings busted things open with a couple of late goals.

Ethan MacKenzie made a heads-up play in the neutral zone poking the puck ahead to an on-rushing Rhett Melnyk who feathered a pass across to Van Olm in the right-circle that he scorched over the shoulder of Mason Beaupit for his second of the season.

Miller increased the lead to 3-0 with just four seconds left in the period after he was denied on a breakaway attempt, he stuck with his own rebound and was able to bank it off Beaupit and in for his second tally of the campaign.

In the third period, the Chiefs threw everything they had at the Edmonton net putting 22 shots the way of Hay who was marvelous turning aside all but one to give the Oil Kings their first win of the season.

Hay finished the night making 33 saves, while Beaupit kicked aside 19 shots in the losing effort for Spokane. The Oil Kings went 1-for-2 on the power play, the Chiefs were 0-for-6.
