Oil Kings Edged by Giants

October 28, 2022 – Western Hockey League (WHL)Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oil Kings surrendered a third period power play goal to the Vancouver Giants on Thursday night that ultimately proved to be the difference in a 2-1 win for the visitors.

The Oil Kings got off to a quick start after Vojtech Port opened the scoring 2:32 into the game after he was sprung on a partial breakaway and ripped a shot past the right arm of Brett Mirwald following a perfectly placed neutral zone pass from Marshall Finnie to create the opportunity.

The Giants were able to level the score just before the first intermission after Colton Langkow tipped in a point shot from Tom Cadieux on a Vancouver power play.

A penalty filled second period saw both clubs trade power play opportunities but neither team could find a go-ahead goal before the end of the middle stanza.

Oil Kings goaltender Alex Worthington stopped all 16 shots he faced in the period, while Mirwald was also perfect on seven Edmonton shots.

Midway through the third period, the Giants were able to pull ahead after Mazden Leslie tucked in Vancouver’s second power play goal of the night with a pinballing drive from the blueline.

The Oil Kings pressed for an equalizer in the final moments but were unable to beat Mirwald for a second time.

Worthington earned first star honours for the Oil Kings making 37 saves in the losing effort, while Mirwald finished up with 31 stops. The Oil Kings went 0-for-5 on the power play, the Giants were 2-for-7.
