September 10, 2022 – Western Hockey League (WHL) – Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oil Kings dropped a 2-1 decision to the Saskatoon Blades at the Downtown Community Arena on Saturday in the second game of their four-game pre-season schedule.
The Blades opened the scoring 2:50 into the first period after Conner Roulette was able to zip a shot through a swarm of bodies in front of Oil Kings netminder Jake Pilon off a clean faceoff win by Saskatoon in their offensive zone.
Both teams finished the opening 20 minutes with six shots each with Roulette’s being the only one to find the back of the net to keep the score 1-0 in favour of the Blades at the first intermission.
In the second period, the Oil Kings levelled the score on a 5-on-3 power play after Logan Dowhaniuk spotted an open Carson Golder in the right-wing circle for a no-doubter one-time blast.
With just over a minute left in the second period, the Blades restored their lead after Roulette scored his second of the night on a breakaway.
A tightly contested third period saw each team muster just six shots on goal and neither team solving the others goalkeeper, giving the Blades a second straight one-goal decision over the Oil Kings.
Jake Pilon (12/14) and Kolby Hay (6/6) combined for 18 saves in the Edmonton crease, while Ethan Chadwick stopped 22 of the 23 shots thrown his way for Saskatoon. The Oil Kings went 1-for-4 on the power play, the Blades were 0-for-3.
