Oil Kings Drop Third in a Row in Everett

October 12, 2022 – Western Hockey League (WHL)Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Everett, WA – The Edmonton Oil Kings got a 56-save performance from Kolby Hay in Everett on Wednesday night but fell 6-2 to the Silvertips at the Angel of the Winds Arena.

Kolby Hay turned in a masterful first period for the Oil Kings after the Silvertips were able to generate 23 shots on the Edmonton goaltender in the opening 20 minutes.

With just 10 seconds left in the first period, the Silvertips were able to finally breakthrough on Hay and the Oil Kings after Ryan Hofer peeled the puck off the end boards in the Edmonton zone, powered his way in front of the net and stuffed home the go-ahead marker.

In the second period, the Oil Kings pushed back in a big way getting a pair of goals from Rhett Melnyk in the opening 4:16 of the middle stanza to take a 2-1 lead.

Melnyk got Edmonton on the board at the 1:57 mark with a power play tally after he took a pass from Logan Dowhaniuk in the left-circle, walked in and picked the top corner over the glove of Tim Metzger.

Just 2:19 later, Melnyk staked Edmonton to the lead after Cole Carrier feathered a pass to him in the right-circle off the right-side boards and Melnyk wasted no time zipping a hot-shot under the pads of Metzger for his third of the season and first career multi-goal game.

The ‘Tips would throw another 23 shots the way of Hay in the second period and were able to snag a late power play goal from Hofer to level the score at two through 40 minutes.

In the third period, the Silvertips were able to blow the game open thanks to an Olen Zellweger third period hat-trick on their way to claiming a 6-2 victory over the Oil Kings.

Hay set an Oil Kings franchise record for most saves in a regular-season game with his 56 kicks. Silvertips goaltender Metzger recorded his first career win making 17 saves. The Oil Kings were 1-for-2 on the power play, the Silvertips were 1-for-1.
