Oil Kings Drop Overtime Thriller to Regina

Edmonton, AB – A power play goal in overtime gave the Regina Pats a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Thursday night at Rogers Place.
The Oil Kings trailed the game 3-1 in the second period, but thanks to a three assist night from Gavin Hodnett and the first career WHL goal and assist from Luca Hauf, they were able to fight their way back for a hard-earned point.

After no scoring in the first 17:30 of the opening frame, the Oil Kings and Pats combined for three goals in a span of 2:09 to close the period.
The Pats opened the scoring after Tanner Howe skated onto a loose puck in the high-slot of the Edmonton zone and ripped a shot through a screen and over the right-arm of Oil Kings goaltender Kolby Hay.
The Oil Kings responded just 27 seconds later after Hodnett had a stripped a puck from a Regina skater just inside the Pats blueline find his stick and then made a crisp cross-ice pass to setup Hauf to get Edmonton on the board. Oil Kings forward Marshall Finnie, who caused the turnover, collected his first career WHL point with an assist on the goal.
Before the period was out, Connor Bedard restored the Regina lead with just 12.9 seconds left after he cut his way to the front of the Edmonton net a fired a shot under the pad of Hay.
The Pats increased their lead to two less than five minutes into the second period after Borya Valis found a wide-open Howe at the top of the left-circle in the Edmonton zone where he scorched a one-timer into the back of the net for his second goal of the night.
With just over seven minutes left in the middle stanza the Oil Kings got on the comeback trail with a power play goal from Mason Finley who cashed in his second of the campaign off a rebound in front of the Regina net off a Carson Golder shot.
The Oil Kings then tied the game just 1:10 later after Ethan Peters was able to direct a point shot through a maze off bodies in front of the Regina net for his first goal of the season.
After a quiet third period, the two clubs required overtime to decide the difference.
In the bonus period, the Oil Kings were flagged for a couple of penalties a minute apart, and just after the Oil Kings killed off the first penalty, Bedard was setup on a cross-ice pass for the game winner and his second tally of the night.
Hay finished the night making 33 saves for the Oil Kings, while Drew Sim collected the win with a 22 save effort at the other end of the ice. Edmonton was 1-for-5 on the power play, the Pats were 1-for-6.
Next up, the Oil Kings begin a six-game road trip on Saturday night as they visit the Prince Albert Raiders at 7:00 P.M.
