Mooseheads Home Opener Saturday
September 26, 2022 – Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) – Halifax Mooseheads News Release
Your Halifax Mooseheads will debut their fresh new look on Saturday night at Scotiabank Centre in the Home Opener versus Cape Breton at 7pm.
The team unveiled an updated logo and uniforms last this week ahead of the franchise’s 29th season and have some high expectations heading into the year in the Maritimes Division. Halifax was given an Honourable Mention in the first CHL Top 10 Rankings of the season, with only Quebec (#2), Gatineau (#6) and Sherbrooke (#9) ranked ahead of them in the QMJHL.
Hurricane Fiona wiped out the originally scheduled Home Opener last Friday night with the make-up date yet to be announced by the QMJHL. The Mooseheads are scheduled to start the season on the road this Friday in Cape Breton before the teams come to Halifax for Saturday’s tilt.
18-year-old Jordan Dumais is coming off a 109-point season which was good for fourth best in Mooseheads history behind only Ramzi Abid, Ladislav Nagy and Brandon Reid. The breakout year led to Dumais becoming a third round draft pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets and he is currently attending training camp with the NHL team but expected to be sent back to Halifax in the coming weeks. He will be a focal point on the top line along with 19-year-old forward Zach L’Heureux who currently remains at camp with the Nashville Predators. L’Heureux was a 2021 first round pick of the Preds. Defenceman Cam Whynot and forward Evan Boucher have been sent back to the Herd after spending time at Calgary Flames training camp. Forward Markus Vidicek has also returned from Arizona’s camp. Defenceman Jake Furlong was a fifth round pick of San Jose over the summer and currently remains at camp with the Sharks.
New faces on the Mooseheads blue-line this season include 19-year-old import David Moravec of Czechia and rookies Owen Phillips and Jack Martin. Phillips was the seventh overall pick in July’s QMJHL Entry Draft while Martin was Halifax’s third round pick in 2021. There are also a handful of new faces among the forward group including 19-year old Ontario free agent Brody Fournier. Fournier comes to the team from the Smiths Falls Bears where he led the CCHL in goal scoring with 37 tallies. 18-year-old Braeden MacPhee is ready for his first full season in a Halifax uniform after being called up to finish the year with the Mooseheads in the spring. Rookie Reece Peitzsche was a second round pick in July after a 42 point season with the Cole Harbour Wolfpack. His former Cole Harbour teammate Jake Todd was acquired from Chicoutimi in August and is set to make his QMJHL debut. Liam Welsh cracked the final roster after an excellent season with the Halifax Macs. Welsh appeared in nine games for the Mooseheads as a call-up last season.
