September 16, 2022 – National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) – San Diego Wave FC News Release
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego Wave Fútbol Club (9-6-4, W-L-D) plays its debut match at Snapdragon Stadium against fellow Southern California expansion side, Angel City FC (7-6-5) this Saturday, Sept. 17, at 7:00 p.m. PT. The match will be available for streaming on Paramount+ for domestic viewers and Twitch for international viewers. The two expansion sides meet for the fourth time this year with their overall head-to-head record level at 1-1-1.
“It’s a massively exciting occasion for us as a club. It’s a momentous sell-out record. My job as a head coach is to make sure I focus on the game and that there are very few distractions for what we want to achieve, how we want to play, what our game plan is, and giving the players the belief and the detail to be able to execute.”
Casey Stoney, San Diego Wave FC Head Coach
The last matchup between Wave FC and Angel City FC took place on July 9, where Angel City took the first league match between the expansion sides with a 2-1 win. Wave FC defender Kristen McNabb scored the lone San Diego goal in the 60th minute. The match stayed level until Angel City FC doubled its score in the 81st minute as Claire Emslie buried a ball into the left of the net, sending the home team away with 3 points.
This match took place during an international window, and Wave FC played without key players goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan (CAN), forward Alex Morgan (USA), defender Naomi Girma (USA), midfielder Taylor Kornieck (USA) and forward Sofia Jakobsson (SWE).
After this Saturday’s matchup, San Diego Wave FC returns home to Snapdragon Stadium on Friday, Sept. 30, as they take on North Carolina Courage for the final match of the regular season. Tickets for the match are available at sandiegowavefc.com/tickets/.
