Maryland Sweeps New Jersey in Opening Weekend

The Maryland Black Bears were looking to sweep an opening weekend series for the first time in franchise history after defeating the New Jersey Titans last night in a 4-2 win. In the rematch, the Black Bears were able to edge out the Titans in a penalty-filled contest, winning 3-1.


Maryland forward Samuel Stitz got the scoring started for the Black Bears, chipping home a rebound for his first goal as a Black Bear. New Jersey tied it on the power play with a goal from forward Johnny McMahon to make it 1-1. With 2.6 seconds to go in the second period, Maryland forward Adam Schankula redirected a shot from defenseman Luke Van Why on the power play into the net to make it 2-1 Black Bears. Maryland concluded the scoring with another power play goal, this time from Sean Kilcullen on a one-time goal to make it 3-1, a score that will hold to be the final.

The Black Bears will head to the North American Hockey League showcase in Blaine, MN, for a four-game set against out-of-division teams from September 14 to September 17. Maryland will take on the Janesville Jets, El Pase Rhinos, Aberdeen Wings, and New Mexico Ice Wolves. The Black Bears will return home to Piney Orchard Ice Arena to take on the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks on Friday, October 14th. All games can be streamed on HockeyTV.
