Karlis Mezsargs Announces Commitment to UMass Lowell

KEARNEY, NE. -Tri-City Storm goaltender Karlis Mezsargs has announced a commitment to play collegiate hockey in the future at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He made his USHL debut for Tri-City on September 23rd, 2022, in the Storm’s second game at the 2022 DICK’S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic. Mezsargs notched his first career USHL victory in goal during the same game in Tri-City’s 6-4 victory over the Muskegon Lumberjacks.


Mezsargs, 18, of Riga, Latvia, has appeared in one game in net for Tri-City through the team’s opening two games of the 2022-2023 regular season. He appeared in two games and posted a 1-0-0-0 record in net for Tri-City during the preseason. He faced 36 shots and made 34 saves during 90 minutes of playing time during the exhibition schedule. Mezsargs was selected 108th overall by Tri-City in the 7th round of the 2022 USHL Phase II Draft. Prior to joining the Storm this season, Mezsargs spent the 2021-2022 regular season with HK Riga (MHL, Riga, Latvia). He posted a 10-16-2 record, a Goals Against Average (GAA) of 3.29, and a Save Percentage (SV%) of .903%. He has played on multiple National Junior Teams for Latvia, including the Silver Medal winning team at the 2021-2022 Under-20 World Junior Championship’s (D1A) division. He also previously played for HK Ako/Baltie Vilki (Latvia2, Marupe, Latvia), HS Riga (Latvia1, Riga, Latvia), and Florida Eels (USPHL, Fort Myers, Florida). The list of former Storm players who have skated for the UMass Lowell River Hawks includes Bobby Robins (2001-2002), Sam D’Agostino (2005-2006), T.J. Massie (2008-2009), Kevin Boyle (2008-2009), Bill Eiserman (2010-2011), Mattias Goransson (2014-2016), and Isac Jonsson (2020-2021).
