Jumbo Shrimp and Stripers Split de Facto Doubleheader

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Despite a 7-0 loss in the resumption of Friday’s contest, Brian Miller smacked an RBI triple in extra innings to give the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp a 4-3 win in game two of their de facto doubleheader with the Gwinnett Stripers Saturday night at Coolray Field.


Payton Henry started at second in the ninth inning of game two, following two quick outs, Miller tripled off Gwinnett (61-67) reliever William Woods (L, 1-1) to put Jacksonville (69-59) ahead for the final time in game two, 4-3.

Jacksonville took the early lead in game two in the top of the first. Miller singled to lead off the inning and Jordan Groshans and Avi Garcia walked to load the bases. Jesús Sánchez singled home Miller to put the Jumbo Shrimp ahead 1-0. Two batters later, Troy Johnston drove in a run on a groundball to push the lead to 2-0.

Gwinnett responded in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Taylor Motter walked and scored on a double from Hernán Perez to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Jacksonville padded their lead in the top of the fifth. Miller doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, he scored on a sac fly from Garcia to increase the Jumbo Shrimp lead to 3-1.

The Stripers rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. Jake Marisnick led off with a triple and scored on a double from Motter in the following at-bat. Perez smacked the third consecutive hit of the inning that scored Motter to tie the game at three. Friday’s contest saw Gwinnett jump out to a big lead in the third. With two outs Rylan Bannon walked and advanced to second as Taylor Motter reached on an error. With two runners on, Hernán Perez singled to score Bannon from second and give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead. With runners at first and second, in the following at-bat, Tyler White smacked a three-run home run to push the Stripers lead to 4-0. The Stripers continued to pound the ball in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Delino DeShields Jr. walked and two batters later scored on a single from Ozzie Albies. In the ensuing at-bat, Alex Dickerson, entered as a pinch hitter for Bannon, smashed a two-run home run to give Gwinnett a 7-0 advantage. Jacksonville and Gwinnett wrap up their series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. The Jumbo Shrimp will hand the ball to RHP Parker Bugg (1-0, 1.89 ERA) and the Stripers will counter with RHP Freddy Tarnok (1-0, 2.45 ERA).
