September 17, 2022 – North American Hockey League (NAHL)Odessa Jackalopes News Release

Yesterday Odessa took on the North Iowa Bulls for day three of the NAHL Showcase. The Jacks were looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season after losing 5-2 to Aberdeen. Whereas the Bulls entered with a perfect record and were looking to continue their shutout streak.

The first period was very back and forth until the scoreless game was broken by Cayden Casey (2) with less than three minutes to go in the period. The Jacks finished the opening period recording six shots on Erik Chaffe. The Bulls put up seven on rookie goalie, Hunter Hein.

North Iowa came out aggressive to start the middle period and were rewarded with two goals. All within the first 1:35 of the period. Their second goal of the game came from Justin Mexico (2) while his squad was on the powerplay. Later it would be the Union commit, Joey Potter (1), making it 3-0 Bulls. While Odessa was unable to find the back of the net through 40 minutes, they were outshooting North Iowa, 20-19.

Only one goal was scored in the final period, and it was another power-play goal for the Bulls. The Ferris State commit, Jack Mesic (1), made it 4-0 North Iowa with just under three minutes left to go in regulation. For the third-straight day North Iowa has won via a shutout. The Bulls finished with 33 shots and the Jacks had 23. Odessa went 0/4 on the man advantage and North Iowa went 2/4.

The Jacks final game of the NAHL Showcase is against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. The Ice Dogs have a record of 3-2 but are 1-2 at the Showcase. Head Coach Scott Deur had this to say about facing his former team this afternoon, “Obviously I spent six years in Fairbanks, but they have a whole new coaching staff now and a whole new game plan. Hopefully we can out compete them and play for 60 minutes.” Puck drop for this matchup is scheduled for 12:45 pm CDT.
