Hungry Dogs Come up Short
September 29, 2022 – Ontario Hockey League (OHL) – Niagara IceDogs News Release
The IceDogs dropped the 2022-23 regular season opener 4-3 in overtime to the visiting Mississauga Steelheads.
Facing the 8th ranked team in the CHL, Daniel Fitzgerald’s team quickly erased a 2-0 deficit in the third. Juan Copeland set up Aiden Castle 1:12 into the period with Pasquale Zito collecting the second assist. A power-play pass interception and a quick snapshot off the stick of Brendan Sirizzotti evened the count at 3:23.
After the visitors regained the lead, Pasquale Zito’s first in a Niagara uniform ended the scoring in regulation, just after the eight minute mark. Assists went to Sirizzotti and Ryan Vannetten, collecting his first OHL point.
The only shot in overtime ended the contest, spoiling the Dogs debut of Owen Flores. The IceDogs back stopper was perfect on 34 of Mississauga’s 37 shots in goal.
Next up, a Michigan road trip beginning with a stop in Flint, to face another CHL Top-10 squad Saturday night.
