Hockey Fights Cancer Assist Night November 5th

October 17, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL)Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa – The Waterloo Black Hawks’ Hockey Fights Cancer Assist Night will be on Saturday, November 5th during a 6:05 p.m. game against the Sioux Falls Stampede.

The game is presented by Mike Molstead Motors of Charles City and benefits the American Cancer Society. The Hawks will wear a unique cancer-awareness uniform during the game, with the jerseys auctioned at the end of the evening. An array of other commemorations are planned throughout the night, including the chance to cheer on cancer survivors before puck drop and opportunities to remember loved ones affected by illness.

“Our organization has had many cancer commemorations and initiatives over the years. We want to make this the most memorable and most impactful, which is why we have teamed up with the American Cancer Society for the first time,” said Black Hawks President of Business Operations Joe Greene. “We are hopeful this will be a special night for a lot of people. Special thanks to Mike Molstead, because this is a special cause for him.”

Molstead was raised in the Cedar Valley and attended the University of Northern Iowa before opening his namesake dealership in 1995. He has been a cancer survivor since 2001. In the past two decades, Molstead’s dealership has been a prominent participant in several cancer awareness efforts, as well as fundraising for a wide variety of worthy northeast Iowa causes.

“Cancer unfortunately has affected most of us in one way or another in our lifetimes,” observed Molstead. “It’s our honor to join the Black Hawks on this special night bringing awareness, raising a little money, and most importantly, recognizing the courageous warriors who have fought this disease.”

On November 5th, the Black Hawks’ jerseys will be a black and lavender design. Lavender represents the fight against cancer across its many forms. The Waterloo logo on the front of the jersey will be tinted in a matching shade, as will the numbers on the back. An American Cancer Society emblem will appear on each shoulder. Bidding for the jerseys will begin after the game during a live auction.

Throughout the night, a separate silent auction will be held on the Young Arena concourse with many team-related items up for bid in support of the cause. Fans are also encouraged to arrive early for a special presentation before the game begins, where Black Hawks players will welcome 25 cancer survivors to the ice. Those in attendance will also be asked to note the name of a friend or loved one affected by cancer on an “I Fight for…” sign, which can be displayed throughout the game before appearing on Young Arena’s designated “Wall of Hope” throughout the month of November.

“The American Cancer Society is so excited to partner with the Waterloo Black Hawks on a special Hockey Fights Cancer Night,” said the charity’s Kevin Kann. “We are looking forward to the community coming together to make a difference in the fight against cancer.”
