Hawks Win in Overtime, Improve to 4-0-0 on Season
October 9, 2022 – Western Hockey League (WHL) – Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. -After a furious Tigers’ comeback effort in the final three minutes of play, the Winterhawks responded in overtime as Kyle Chyzowski potted the game-winner to seal a 4-3 win for Portland.
With the win, the Winterhawks are 4-0-0 for the first time since the 1993-94 season.
As he did in the Hawks’ home opener, James Stefan (steh-FAWN) got the scoring started in the first period for an early Portland lead. After Carter Sotheran put a shot off the glass behind the net, Jack O’Brien corralled the loose puck and found Stefan in the slot for the one-timed tally. The Hawks made it 2-0 three minutes later on Luca Cagnoni’s (can-YO-knee’s) second of the year from Josh Zakreski. The 2023 NHL Draft prospect collected a pass from Zakreski in the neutral zone, chipped it past the Tigers’ defenseman and coolly slotted it home between the legs of Medicine Hat netminder Beckett Langkow.
The Tigers got one back on a breakaway strike from Tomas Mrsic (MURR-sick) in the second period, but Zakreski soon restored the hosts’ two-goal lead before the second intermission. Chipping in his second primary helper of the evening, O’Brien picked off a Medicine Hat pass in the Winterhawks’ zone and carried it across the Tigers’ blue line before holding up and hitting a streaking Zakreski on the left-wing side for a quick snapshot past Langkow.
Medicine Hat began to mount its game in the final frame, culminating in a pair of late tallies from Alex Drover and Brendan Lee to force overtime, but Chyzowski wrapped up the second point for Portland with a breakaway tally midway through the extra period. Ryder Thompson picked up the primary assist with a stretch pass to Chyzowski at the far blue line to send him in alone on Langkow.
Dante Giannuzzi remained perfect on the young season with 20 saves on 23 shots to move to 3-0-0.
Portland now travels to Spokane to take on the Chiefs tomorrow at 5:05 P.M.
