Emmett Croteau made 19 saves and the Waterloo Black Hawks made a solid first impression on the home fans Wednesday during a 5-0 exhibition win against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at Young Arena.

The Hawks built a healthy shots advantage in the middle stages of the opening period and had a breakthrough for the game’s first goal at 10:55. Griffin Erdman accelerated to a loose puck which had gotten behind a Cedar Rapids defender. Cutting through the left circle, he strruck on a wrist shot wired past Peyton Grainer. Waterloo finished the period with a 17-7 edge in pucks on frame.

The Hawks translated their big opening period shots advantage into a highly productive middle frame. At 3:04, Gavin O’Connell was the third forward into the offensive zone; he received a pass from Jake McLean and rifled it over Grainer’s glove. Two-and-a-half minutes later, Myles Hilman capitalized on a two-on-one rush, scoring from a similar spot.

It was less than five minutes from O’Connell’s tally when Garrett Schifsky added a third marker during a power play. Camped near the right hashmark, he buried a chance after O’Connell dished him the puck. Sam Rinzel capped the period’s offense at 18:13, making the most of Gavin Thoreson’s efforts to create time and space in the right circle.

A scoreless third period included a dozen Waterloo chances. The final shot count favored Waterloo 44-19.

Waterloo’s final preseason trip is Friday in Des Moines, then the Buccaneers visit the Hawks the following afternoon to conclude the exhibition slate at 3:05 p.m. on Saturday.
