Hawks Catch Bucs in Barrage
October 30, 2022 – United States Hockey League (USHL) – Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks peppered the Des Moines Buccaneer net with the United States Hockey League’s highest shot total of the season during a 5-1 Sunday victory at Young Arena.
Waterloo put 55 shots on net, easily eclipsing the 46 which three other clubs had achieved during the opening month of the season. The win bumped the Hawks one point ahead of the Bucs for fourth place in the Western Conference at the end of the weekend.
Garrett Schifsky started the scoring during a Black Hawks power play seven minutes into the game. Ben Robertson swung a pass from the left point to Schifsky above the opposite circle, and Schifsky potted his fifth of the season under Max Lundgren’s glove.
Just less than three minutes later, a Schifsky faceoff win led to the Hawks’ second tally. After Schifsky pulled the puck back, Gavyn Thoreson triggered a shot through traffic that found its way into the net.
Zach Bade added another goal at 18:11. His first USHL strike came on Oliver Flynn’s first assist. As defenders backed down, Bade was able to stride toward the net to score in transition.
Des Moines produced the lone second period goal at 13:51. Daniel Astapovich sprang into the Waterloo zone for a transition chance, then collected his own rebound to score after Jack Spicer’s initial save.
Spicer stopped everything else, making 18 saves for his second win in two starts.
The Hawks padded the lead in the third; James Hong notched a power play goal from the left circle at 5:07. That made the game the first occasion this season in which Waterloo has recorded multiple special teams goals.
Myles Hilman finished the scoring at 15:17, redirecting a shot by Robertson. It was the defenseman’s third assist of the afternoon.
The Hawks continue their season-long eight game homestand next Saturday versus the Sioux Falls Stampede. The 6:05 p.m. contest will be Hockey Fights Cancer Assist Night, and Waterloo’s cancer awareness jerseys will be auctioned after the game to benefit the American Cancer Society.
